Cry's pov
The days have been getting hotter as Spring nears. (I dont know the seasons in America but im just gonna go with the order here) it isn't quite hot enough to take off my jumper though. I probably wouldn't take it off even if it got that hot anyway."There. Deer tracks," Russ saud quietly next to me. I looked to where he was pointing and saw the tracks leading away from us. I motioned for him to stay behind before quietly following the trail.
We were quiet as the wind blew directly into our faces. It meant the deer wouldn't be able to smell us coming. We just had to stay quiet and the creature wouldn't notice us. (It is not their senpai) It felt weird working with Russ after working with Felix for so long. I had gotten used to his heavy breathing and footsteps that were too loud. Now everything felt too quiet.
"Female," Russ whispered, drawing his bow. I put a hand on the arrow, preventing him from fireing it.
"We don't kill females," I whispered harshly. Russ frowned and shuffled his bow away from me.
"We're low on food and it's the first deer we've seen all week," Russ hissed quietly. The deers head shot up and it looked around, sniffing the air. We remained silent as it lowered its head again and continued eating.
"There will be more. It's heating up now," I said softly. I never liked the concept of shooting female animals. They were there to produce more animals. Every now and then I would yes, but not all the time. I know you need the males to breed them but shooting females just seems wrong to me.
"How long until then? What if the dead get to them before we do? What then Cry?" Russ said desperately. This lack of food has made everyone on edge; Russ especially with Red pregnant.
"Fine. But only one and I'll do it. That bow isn't going to be strong enough to damage it enough. You follow me through after I shoot though," I said quietly. He frowned but didn't object.
I raised the crossbow in my hands and aimed at the doe. I held my breath as I steadied my weapon. I quickly looked over at Russ and nodded before pulling the trigger. The bolt shot through the air and impailed the deer through the side. A second arrow shot past as soon as mine had been fired, also hitting the deer but at a lower point.
The deer reared up before rushing away from us into the now greening woods. Russ and I automatically jumped to our feet and pursue the bleeding deer. A blood trail led us directly to the animal. It lay winded on the defrosting grass, blood trailing down it's body.
I quickly pulled out my knife and put it at rest. I didn't like it suffering so much pain. It's body fell lifeless and it stopped breathing. I let out a quiet sigh before standing up. Then I heard a squacky sound. It kinda sounded like a mix between a bird and a scream? Maybe. I wasn't sure but it sounded quite close.
Me and Russ ducked down low and listened as to where the noise was coming from. It sounded pretty close, as if it was in the bushes just ahead of us. I watched the shrub closely drawing a new bolt in my crossbow and aiming it towards the bushes.
I slowly crept towards the green with as little noise as possible. As I grew closer, the noise changed slightly. The sound was still a little unfamiliar to me but I had a few ideas. I stopped a few feet infront of the bushes and just watched.
After a few seconds of silence something leapt out at me. It was just a blur of orange until it was directly in my arms; making me drop my crossbow. It tried to scratch at my face but I quickly pushed it away from me. I fell backwards onto my back, holding the snapping, yapping creature above my head.
I heard a whoosh sound before the thing in my arms fell still. I rolled to my side and let it fall to the ground. After taking several deep breaths I overlooked the situation. The thing that had attacked me was indeed a fox; an arrow now sticking out of its chest. (Russ is going to die for that)
I looked behind me to see Russ lower his bow. I nodded in thanks but it didn't make me feel better about killing the fox. We just happened to walk into its territory and it tried to protect it.
I heard more shuffling coming from the bushes and quickly climbed to my feet. I raised my crossbow again and readied to fire. A small fox cub staggered out of the bushes, looking only a few days old if that. It looked at the dead fox before letting out a helpless squeek. We'd killed its mother.
"Don't even think about it Cry," Russ said from behind me. I ignored him as I picked up the fox and craddled it in my arms. It was so cute and small, it wouldn't be able to fend for itself out here.
"You want me to call in or you gonna do it?" I asked Russ. He let out a sigh before pulling out a walkie talkie.
"Scott isn't going to be ahppy with this," He warned.
"Scott's oppinion doesn't matter in this situation. I will look after the baby," I said softly, stroking the fox cub across its back.
"Fine. You deal with him. I'll call in," Russ said with a sigh. "Yo freak." I chuckled at the nickname.
"What do you want idiot," A certain Swedish voice called back through, sounding tired but alert.
"Be a lad and bring the quad over to us would you; we got a deer. We're east by the river," Russ saidafter looking around. There was indeed a river nearby. I hadn't noticed that before.
"Nah, I'm just gonna let you drag the deer all the way back to camp. Have fuuun," Felix called through, leaving the call on long enough for us to hear the quad start up.
I love foxes. I want a fox. Someone get me a fox for my birthday. Or now, that'd be nice too.
