As Rover and I approached the dining hall, the sweet and savory aromas of our breakfast wafted through the air.
"I smell my favorite!" Rover squealed with excitement as he took his seat at the table next to me.
"Breakfast for a future king of Azgeda, I see." Confid joined Rover and I at the table as he was going to be Rover's mentor now that he was of age.
The cooks brought in our food, served on special silver platters we only used on special occasions such as this day.
"For the young prince. Happy birthday, your highness." There was a glint of excitement in Rover's eyes as he watched his platter being set down in front of him.
Immediately after, he grabbed a knife and fork and looked at me as if begging me to just let him dig in, "well what you waiting for Ro? It's your birthday! Attack it." He did just that.
Face covered in crumbs and syrup dripping from his face and onto his lap. His cheeks overly stuffed to the point where he could barely even smile. "Zhissh ish soooo ummy"
"Rover, don't talk with your mouth full please."
"Sowwy," he gulped the rest of what was left in his mouth before speaking, "I love this stuff so much."
"We can tell!" Confid said chuckling.
"I wish we could eat cakepans all the time!"
"Cake pans?" I questioned, slightly amused.
"Yeah that's what they're called right? What our old old people call them?"
"I think you mean pancakes, my love."
"Oh yeah that! Pancakes, they're yummy."
"Okay then Mr. Pancake lover, go get cleaned up and then meet Confid out in the courtyard. Today's the day you get to start your training." His eyes lit up with even more excitement than it already had as he bolted for the quarters. "Good luck with my son, Confid."
"I think I can handle him, I handled both you and Roan pretty well didn't I?" My smile faltered as he spoke the name. "My apologies, Gona. I-"
I raised my hand, "do not worry Confid, it's not your fault. I guess I must need some retraining on my warrior's mask. The skill I once mastered has been faltering." He only nodded understanding the situation I was in.
After a few moments of silence I looked to Confid, "dear mentor, have you heard of any news from Echo?"
"I have yet to hear any word, Gona."
"Strange. Echo is always up to date under any circumstances...GUARDS!" My men came marching into the dining hall alert, "have you any word from Echo?"
"None your highness. Last we heard she was in the West side of the woods." One of them stated.
"West side. Near Skaikru." I said to no one in particular.
"What are your plans, Gona?" Confid asked slightly concerned.
Taking a few seconds to speak I looked at the head of my guards, "gather a few of your men and head out to find Echo. Something is telling me there's something wrong, here. She may have been captured or worse, injured. Find her and bring her back immediately. Anyone who gets in your way...bring them back to me hostaged and alive. Understood?"
"Yes, Gona." They retreated from the hall off to seek Echo just as Rover re entered dressed in his new attire Confid had gotten him a few days before his birthday.
It was an outfit that he would train in; it was an exact replica to Roan's outfit the day he fought against the man from Trishanakru. Rover wore a blue long sleeve under a black vest made of what seemed to be leather and other scraps of fabric. The front of the vest laced in strapped detailing that went along with the strapped cuffs around his wrist and forearm. His hair tied half up into a ponytail, just barely showing a few of the braids he had in his hair. The paint on his face black and white as if he were really about to perform a sacred Azgedan ritual like a duel. And on his hip, harnessed by a holster was a sword for his size. A sword whose blade was sharp enough to cut a blade of grass in half and sturdy enough to go through the bodies of 3 different people all at once. It wasn't until I saw the handle on the sword wrapped in cloth and marked with the letter R that I realized it was Roan's old sword that Confid had given Rover.
Rover was starting to look more and more like Roan, and at this rate there would be no way of me hiding the truth anymore.
