After splitting with the rest of the group Kane, Abby and I decided we would spread apart, about 10 feet from each other, that way we'd have a better chance at finding any clues if there were any to be found.
My feet were hurting and my clothes were doing nothing to keep me warm but I was determined to find Rover. All that mattered in my head was finding this little boy and bringing him back home.
I guess I had been thinking too hard about Rover because when I looked up, I could no longer see Abby or Kane. The sky had turned from dark gray to pitch black, only the little light from the stars and moon shining down. I sighed heavily, "KANE? ABBY?" No response. I continued walking to look for Rover, I'd find Kane and Abby eventually.
While walking, I continually shouted out Kane and Abby's names in hopes that I'd cross paths again but there was no point anymore, we had split too far from each other. I could feel my feet giving way under me so I decided to take a break. I found a boulder-esque spot to lean against, there were leaves partially covering it and a small hole behind the leaves, just big enough that a medium sized animal could fit through.
"Kane? Abby?..." I tried again pathetically. I leaned on the rock formation and half heartedly laughed to myself. I was going to die from the cold out here and I had no one here to help me. Shaking my head I tried something different, "Rover...?" I chuckled again, knowing it was stupid to even try.
Suddenly, I heard a stick snap nearby and I froze, my eyes widening as I became more alert to my surroundings. My eyes adjusted to the dark cast of night and I grabbed what I felt was a sharp rock in case someone planned to attack. "Hello? Is anyone out there?"
It was silent for a few seconds before I heard some shuffling to my left where the small crack in the boulder was, "hello?"
"...ow!" a slightly high pitched voice sounded.
Taken aback I spoke up again, "Rover...?" Out of the hole came a little boy covered in dirt, his clothes slightly torn but luckily he wasn't bleeding. "Rover is that you?"
The little boy looked up, skepticism plastered all over his face, a look I knew all too well as Roan's face contained a whole lot of that anytime Clarke came up with a plan. His blue eyes were fierce under the night sky, the darkness only brightening his irises. Though young and innocent, this little boy showed no sign of fear as he stood chest out across from me.
"Hi Rover, I'm Rachel." I stepped forward extending my arm. With one slick movement, Rover came forward and then a sharp pain on my forearm made itself known, "OW, WHAT THE-?!" Rover had slit my arm, blood now dripping to the ground. He sure as hell is Roan's son, alright.
"Don't come closer!" He warned, pointing the dagger towards me. "How do you know my name?"
"Your mom, I'm friends with your mom." I raised my hands in the air, showing him I surrendered. His form did not changed, he remained still alert.
"LIAR!" He took a step back as he shouted.
"No, Rover, stay! Please...I can prove it..."I racked my brain trying to remember what Jessica had told me, "Rose...rose? YES, ROSE! IT'S ROSE." He looked at me quizically, "the princess...Rose."
"How do you know that story?"
"I don't, but I do know your mom. She told us, told me, that if we find you it was the only way you'd know to trust us. Will you tell me the story while we go look for your mom?"
"You're not tricking me?" Rover lowered his blade a bit, feeling the tension deflate.
"No, I swear. Your mom is Jessica Kom Azgeda, no?"
"Yes."
"I promise, I'm one of the good guys, you can keep your dagger out if it makes you feel more safe okay? Now let's get you out of this place." His mood shifted and his eyes began to dart quickly as he furiously nodded his head, his little fingers wrapped around my finger he began to pull me back west.
"You have to run, Rachel! He might find us!"
"Who?"
"The Natrona."
"Who or what was the Natrona?"
