Roan hadn't returned last night from talking to Queen Nia, or maybe he had and I was in too deep of a sleep. And perhaps he had waken up early as well? My mind full of wonder I changed into a pair of new clothes and made my way to go and find Roan.
Without any luck I decided to go find Queen Nia instead with hopes that she would know where my love had gone. I found her in the courtyard overlooking a group of new guards who were training with their swords.
"Hello, my darling," she greeted me with her eyes still on her trainees, "how are you?"
"I'm doing well my Queen. I assume you are too."
"Yes, yes I am." She glanced at me, "you look bothered, is there something wrong?"
"I just- I..."
"Spit it out, Jessica. You know I hate when people aren't straight to the point."
"Right, I'm sorry my queen. Have you seen your son? He didn't return last night from his conference with you and he wasn't there this morning. Not even a letter on his pillow like he usually does when he leaves on an early task."
"My son, yes Roan, my apologies, darling. I sent him off with a few of my men last night."
"For what?"
"As you know, Azgeda won the duel, and well, seems as though Trishanakru weren't too happy with the outcome. There were threats in the woods, their men around the perimeter. I sent Roan and the others to go handle it."
I nodded understanding the situation, "but couldn't you have just sent out the guards? Why did you have to send Roan out too?"
"Jessica, dear, your Roan will soon rule over Azgeda. What ruler would he be if he didn't handle his problems like a true king? As a prince, it is his job to protect Azgeda, we can't have anyone thinking he's weak, now can we?"
"No we can't. I guess you're right."
"Of course I'm right. Now run along and take care of the disciples, they're on top of the hill with Confid. They'll need your expertise with reading body language as well as war tactics. Roan will be back soon, do not worry."
Hours had passed by and Roan had still not returned. Worry took over me and I couldn't help but wonder what the hell was going on out there. With all my patience running out, I suited up for a mission outing and headed out. Just as I was leaving the castle doors, the warriors had returned covered in dirt and tattered clothing.
"What of this?!" Queen Nia came from behind me addressing the guards.
"Your majesty, the prince..." Tethos stepped forward, in his hand he clutched onto Roan's fur vest.
"No..." Anger, frustration and sadness were all starting to build up inside me. Next to me, Confid appeared and placed his hand on my shoulder as he hummed an Azgedan tune to help me calm myself. It was no use, "WHAT HAPPENED?"
"They attacked, it all just happened so fast. The Prince...he was killed in combat, we tried to save him but it wasn't any use. When we knew we couldn't hold them back we left and retreated back here."
"So you left him there?!" I ran up to Tethos and slapped him across the face, a handprint left burning on his left cheek. "HE'S YOUR PRINCE!" SPIT.
"There was no choice left."
I scoffed, "no choice?! TAKE ME TO HIM."
"NO." Queen Nia extended her arm in front of me, "No, Jessica. You stay here and watch over our people. I know you're distraught right now. I will go check on Roan's body myself, afterall he's my son."
"But my queen..."
"Jessica..."
"QUEEN NIA! PLEASE."
"Stay here. I will report back to you, and if he is what we think he is...dead...then Azgeda will claim vengeance for Roan. But please stay here."
Admitting defeat, I nodded my head and watched the queen and the others leave back into the woods. (flashback end)
JESSICA'S POV CONT'D- PRESENT TIME
"I didn't want to believe you were dead but when she came back she had told me they found your body. Who was I to question what she saw? You spoke to her last before you disappeared and then you were nowhere to be found the whole day after. Of course I believed you were dead." A tear rolled down my cheek only for Roan to catch it as he had all the other tears that streamed down my face.
He smiled at me lovingly, something I could never get tired of seeing, "but you never gave up trying to find me."
"No, I couldn't. It was too good to be true, Roan. You are one if not the best warrior we have in Azgeda. I would live the rest of my life scouring every inch of this earth to try and find you. Plus, there was no way I was going to let Rover grow up thinking his father was a failure."
Suddenly, it was as if something clicked in Roan's head as he looked at me skeptically, "Tell me something, Jessica..." Roan asked quietly. His voice still assertive and low pitched.
"Tell you something about what?" I inclined.
"About you and Tethos." His face drew a blank as he just stared straight into my eyes.
"What of Tethos?" This conversation was something I didn't need at this time and in this circumstance, but we were being honest with each other right now. Whatever he was going to say next, I had to answer him.
