5 years old.
I walked through the streets of Azgeda pushing a cart full of things dad and I were going to sell. Metal scraps, extra fur, some meat we had caught earlier that same morning. I was always excited to selling to in Azgeda, especially in the queen's courtyard because there were always warriors to be seen. I was going to be one of them one day.
As the day went on, I was getting restless as today was a slow day. I had seen a girl in the courtyard playing by herself so I slipped away from the stand and made my way to her. The closer I got to her, the more nervous I became. Looking down at my ratty, ripped and recycled clothes I felt ashamed. My blond hair looked brown from the built up dirt since it had been ages since I've had the privilege to take a bath...even in the river. I came from a poverty stricken family and she clearly did not.
Her black hair silky as it flowed from a high ponytail, her clean complexion- a subtle golden bronze. Her clothes were new, a shirt made of rare cotton, pants made of genuine leather. She wore a fur vest not many are allowed to wear.
Not realizing the amount of time I had spent admiring the 5 year old goddess, I was startled to find her waving her ring hand in front of my face.
"Hey kid!" Her full features now coming into view as her little legs carried her across the pavement. "Hi! What's your name?"
"Uh, hi. I'm Tethos. What's yours?"
"My name is Jessica. Do you wanna come play with me?"
Just as I was to answer, a boy a couple years older than us came and stood next to jessica, "no way! You can't play with us."
"ROAN!" Jessica whined.
"He's gross, Jess." I heard Roan mutter under his breath.
Without hesitation I replied, "what? Are you scared of a little dirt?"
The beauty that is Jessica only giggled and that small sound warmed my entire body.
Roan's eyes darted between Jessica and I before he puffed out his chest and flatly said, "royalty don't mingle with peasants like you." He grabbed Jessica by the arm and stormed off. Jessica looked back at me, sadness in her eyes, lips mouthing the words I'm sorry.
'No worries, my love,' I thought to myself, 'I will have you soon.'
15 years old.
Nothing about my life had changed up to this point except that I had grown some. I was still selling pieces of scrap and only got to see Jessica from across the courtyard. Occasionally, she would come over and talk to me until Roan showed up and ruined our moment.Throughout the years, I had learned that Jessica was found as a baby, adopted into royalty and was destined to be wed to Prince Roan. By the looks of it though, she didn't want him, he only controlled her. She'd like me better. She and I would make the perfect match, we'd be happy and in love with kids.
As I continued to fantasize about out future, she had walked over to where I was. She picked up a piece of old cloth and draped it around her neck-my, was she beautiful. "Thinking about dream girl again Tethos?" She smirked.
"Always princess" I smirked back knowing she hated when anyone called her that. "Where's Roan?"
Her head tilted to the right as she scrunched her face in question. "Since when do you care about Roan?"
"I don't I was just asking where he was."
"Why? You two are practically always at each other's throats."
"Nothing, I was just wondering how long I get to talk to you before your master comes to claim you."
"First off, you can talk to me even when Roan is here. Secondly he's not my master. He's my boyfriend."
"Boyfriend?!"
"Yeah....well kinda. We haven't exactly labeled it or anything, but we know how we feel about each other.
Nodding my head, I was at a lost for words. BOYFRIEND?! After everything she and I have been through together?! HOW COULD SHE DO THIS TO ME?
"Tethos? You okay? You kinda just zoned out."
"Oh yeah I'm good I just remembered that I had some new to share with you." She raised her brows. "I'm training to be a royal guard."
"Oooh I guess we'll be seeing a lot more of each other then." She smiled.
"I guess so."
"It also means you'll be seeing a lot more of Roan too, so good luck with that." She giggled.
I shook my head, "speaking of the devil."
She turned around and her eyes widened with excitement as she ran and leaped into Roan's arm. The two held each other and shared a few pecks before Jessica brought Roan over to me, "guess what!"
"If it has anything to do with this piece of trash then its most likely not any news I care to hear."
"Roan! Don't talk to him like that."
"Are you really defending him right now?!" Roan asked boastful.
"Well yeah! You're acting like a self entitled prick!"
"Oh don't be so dramatic!" Jessica stormed off pissed and upset.
Just as I was about to follow her Roan's arm blocked my way, "stay away from Jessica."
"You don't own me, you don't tell me what to do."
"I am Prince Roan of Azgeda, son to Queen Nia and grandson to the late King Theo, so in that case...I believe I do."
"Okay fine, but if you keep acting like that and treating people like shit...even Jessica, they will all leave you. Jessica will leave you. She'll leave you for someone better for her, who can treat her with respect, treat her the way she should be, like a queen she's destined to be."
"And a queen she will be, MY QUEEN. So whatever crush you have on her, knock it off now. She will never be yours PEASANT!"
"Wait and watch Roan, one day you will lose her."
"Oh yeah? To who? YOU?! Right."
"Maybe...but now if you'll excuse me I've got to get ready for the open warriors training camp. See you there, prince. And may the best man win."
"Younger your rat's ass I will." With that, we went off our separate ways.
