Of all things in the universe beauty may be the greatest cosmic joke of them all.
People spend time agonizing, dreading, worrying over their appearance. The imperfections of their own face. A face that they have never seen first hand and will never see first hand. Reflections, mirrors which copy our own image are the only recollection that we have of our own features. Yet that one zit, the curvature of your nose, the softness of your eyes they are all points of stress in our lives because they factor into others' perceptions of ourselves.
Beauty that people so desperately clamor for is truly not desired in someone's own right. If someone had grown up in complete isolation with no mirrors or reflections, no reminders of how their face may appear beauty would never be a factor or a worry in their lives.
Take time and look out through your eyes. Look through your field of vision. That, that is all you have. There are no features, there is very little of you at all. Yet beauty is such a pressure point for most of us.
The desire to have something you will never see.
You judge people based on their appearances. Intentionally or not it is truly not something that you can control. People have faces period. That's how we talk, it's where we direct our focus to in a conversation. It's how we pretend to pay attention. Your expressions and your appearance are all factors in ultimate judgement and interpretation.
We strive for beauty to please others. Self- esteem for ourselves, sure, but that draws back to society's opinion of you.
Maybe you desire to be around beauty. Have you ever paused and wondered about people's perceptions of themselves as well.
I started off by saying beauty was a cosmic joke as we can't see it ourselves, yet we care so much and have very little control over it. Ultimately beauty fades as well. Maybe you do achieve perfection at age 20, but what then? There's always a new generation of younger, prettier and more intelligent models on the next line. That's what we've designed as people. Progress. The cost of devoting ourselves to helping the process may mean that we are the workers and not the beneficiaries. I suppose that's an anecdote for another day though.
Look through your eyes and imagine your outer appearance just being a wall containing your being, your personality, your substance. Beauty is on the outside yes that is true. But in a way it's untouchable and invisible to yourself.
This new age always likes to focus on their looks. Younger and younger little girls wear makeup maybe that is because this new age the other thing that has grown significantly is our inability to put down the mirror.
