1989

It was the weekend, finally. Helena could finally have a Joe-free day. She kind of dreaded Sunday, since she had church with the McIntyre's.

Helena had gone for a run, like she always did on Saturdays, and she had just gotten out of the shower. She was mostly happy, since her hair smelled good, and she shaved her legs and everything. She walked into her room, covered in a fluffy towel, she threw her dirty clothes into her hamper, and casually looked through her window and into Joe's room. It was empty. What could Joe be doing at 11 in the morning? She furrowed her eyebrows, racking her brain. Did he have basketball? Was he at band practice? The boys definitely did not wake up this early. Especially not on a Saturday.

The door to Joe's room burst open, and the quick movement made Helena jump back a bit.

"Christ," Helena muttered. Joe and Jennifer were making out in Joe's room.

"Lovely," Helena whispered to herself. Helena closed the blinds, and pulled the curtains shut.

She immediately picked up her phone, and dialled Kimberly's phone number. It rang about four times until a groggy Kimberly picked up the phone.

"What do you want?" Kimberly said sleepily.

"Kim, it's Helena," She spoke quietly into the phone.

"El, what's wrong?" Kimberly said, becoming more awake the longer Helena was on the phone.

"Jennifer is harassing Joe. Well I'm not sure if it's harassment because it seemed like he really enjoyed it, but they're making out in his room, and I don't know what to do," Helena did not take one breath the whole time she was talking.

"Well for one thing, I'm going to need you to calm down, El. Breathe," Kimberly could tell this was breaking Helena's heart. Helena breathed deeply for a few seconds.

"Okay. Do you need me to come over? I can bring ice cream," Kimberly said, and Helena shook her head.

"No, no. I think I'm going to take a nap. Thanks Kim, you're an amazing friend," Helena bit her lip, and put the phone on its base. She put on clothes, and soon fell asleep.

Helena was woken up by screaming. She curled up in her bed, and waited for him to leave. She knew who it was. He shows up at least once a year, and fucks things up. He's always drunk and complaining.

"Get out of my house, asshole!" Helena heard her mom yell. Where was her best friend when she needed him? She heard glass break, and she winced.

The first of September was quite an important day.
