I did exactly the opposite of what Karen had asked and ditched all the rest of the classes, instead I went out to the football field, sat under the bleachers and watched YouTube videos with the school's wifi that I got a girl in my computers class to hack into. I personally loved YouTube, not many others did but when talk went around that I enjoyed watching certain creatures literally everyone watches it now. The app distracted me from everyday life, it has been doing so for a very long time, I don't know why but there was certain people that just lit up my day for no apparent reason and it made me feel good which doesn't happen very often.
I binge watched all of Jenna Marbles' videos, zoella, Alfie and loads of others. It began drizzling and getting windy, before I knew it the rain was pelting down on the bleachers above me, I threw on my jumper and sprinted back to my car. Where to next... Cafe Sweet! I loved this Cafe because it was so warm and cozy but my favorite part was Marge! She's the owner and not to brag or anything but we're like super close.
I began to pull out of the school parking lot when I had to slam on my breaks because the school counselor was standing in the middle of the fricken driveway! He slowly walked up to my window and ordered that I roll it down. "I have a compromise" He began,
"I'm listening" I replied.
"I won't call Karen and John telling them about your attempt of ditching and how you didn't attend four of your classes if you go and repark your car, come with me and have a discussion about what's going on" He explained in that annoying tone that parents use when they don't think you understand what they're saying.
I did as I was told cause I was already in enough trouble with Karen and John as it was and I certainly didn't want to be grounded till i turned 18! I followed him into his office, skipping all the other kids who wanted advice or help.
"So Vanessa, how are you holding up?" He began,
"Look Gary, if I may address you by that, I know and you know deep down that right now you don't want to be speaking with me and the only reason you are is because you get payed double of what every other teacher receives" I stated, lying back and crossing my arms. He slowly clapped his hands.
"Wow just wow! Every week it just gets better" He laughed, still clapping, "Maybe next time try making your voice go deeper, you know, like how when George Hawk made himself speak with a deep voice just so he could perfect that line in 'The School Kid'" He finished laughing. It was a joke we had, every time that I came in here I would complain and recite the line from my favourite movie.
"Well I do try" I giggled.
"Now Vanessa it's time to get back to the point, I need to know what the sudden ditching is about" He said seriously, "Your education is vital and can't just throw it away"
"I know, I was just in a bad zone but I'm sure I'll get out of it" I stated as I began to gather my things and leave.
"Not so fast! Sit back down we're not finished" I did what I was told and sat straight back down. "Are you planning on going to college?" He asked, I shrugged my shoulders, I guess I never really thought about that. "Vanessa you're a junior, next year is the last year to decide and it's better you make the decisions earlier so you know what path you'll take"
"I honestly don't see myself pursuing to college" I shrugged.
"What do you mean?" He questioned,
"I'm just not interested in a career path that leads to retiring at the age of 65 and wondering why I spent pretty much my whole life with such a boring job. I wanna live a little, I wanna get out there, find myself" I explained "I'm intrigued by the way the internet works and how social media can lead to a job"
"You have social media?" He asked, I nodded. "What's your average following?"
"Well my twitter is close to 15k and my instagram is about 19k" I answered, I was shocked by my answer but Gary didn't actually believe me.
"Well all I will say is good luck in trying to get into the internet industry" He laughed sarcastically, "school popularity is important to teenagers but I'm telling you this from experience, after school it doesn't matter, popularity means nothing" he stated.
"I am gonna pursue my dreams, even if it takes years. I don't use my popularity for granted by the way I just see it as having a load of friends" I said angrily as I picked up my stuff and left. I was raging! No one had ever told me to not believe in myself, wasn't school supposed to encourage self belief!?
I slammed my car door shut and sped straight to the nearest camera store, I paced over to the counter and waited for assistance.
"Hello Ma'am, How may I help you?" The woman asked in a polite tone,
"I, I um wanna start a career through social media but I don't have the right equipment and I wanted some advice on what camera's to purchace" I explained nervously.
"Of course, don't worry about it! All sorts of YouTubers come in here looking for advice and I give them the pure truth, now are you looking for doing vlogs or just fun video's?" She asked kindly beginning to walk me around the store,
"Well I was thinking just fun videos and a mix of vlogs here and there" I answered.
"What type of phone do you have?"
"iPhone 7 plus" I replied,
"Ok well if you're just beginning I would recommend use your phone but if you want to go straight in you could use the Canon EOS M3 Kit with 15-45mm Digital Mirrorless Camera that goes for $389.22" She started, holding up a small vlogging camera, "Or if you wanna do good 4k home videos or professional vlogs the Lumix GH4 would be perfect! WHich goes for $1,197.99" She said as if money grew on trees.
"Wow that's a lot of money" I whispered,
"It would be necessary to purchase a microphone to attach onto the Lumix, I would recommend the Rode seeming as it's most trustworthy, that sells for about $70 also a tripod for both camera's which I would recommend, again, to order somewhere cheap offline cause we are no longer selling them" She explained as if she practiced it or something.
"What about lighting?" I asked, by now I knew that literally all my money would be spent on filming equipment.
"From what I've heard the Studio LED Light Kit Fomei 600 is the best" She pointed behind her at lights on stands, "two sell for $645.62" She explained.
We discussed more and more equipment for ages until I finally decided what I would buy, I ended up purchasing the Lumix GH4, the rode microphone, the light kit and some camera lenses, she was so nice and offered a free light for the good business so I took her offer and headed to the local department store. I bought a cheap tripod and finally went home knowing that all the money spent was worth it.
I had to figure out a way to get all the stuff out of my car without Karen or John noticing so I waited till night. I snuck downstairs and grabbed as many boxes as I could and hauled them upstairs, it took maybe 30 mins to get everything up and another 4 hours to set everything up and charge the camera batteries. I was way too excited to wait till morning so I started making my bedroom as aesthetic as heck! Making my bed and covering it in loads of pillows and hanging up frames and putting a cactus that I stole from downstairs on my bedside table. I turned on the lights which quickly blinded me, I then made sure the microphone was on as well as the camera.
"Here we go!" I whispered as I pressed the record button.
"Hey Guys! I'm Vanessa Anderson and welcome to my YouTube channel!"
