"So how would you say the date went?" Cosette asked over the phone. You held it pinched between your shoulder and ear as you talked to her. It was Sunday, the last day of the weekend, and for supper tonight you were making spaghetti for yourself and (B/F).
You asked (B/F) if she wanted any and she jumped at the idea of your cooking. No, you weren't a master chef that created delicacies out of the simplest of food, but you weren't as bad as (B/F) when it came to making food. She wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for her adding too much of some ingredients and not enough of others because she "doesn't like that".
"Mark's too laid-back and childish," you said, measuring the noodles compared to the size of the pot. After getting your thoughts confirmed—the noodles were too long—you broke them in half and dropped them into the boiling water. You could hear her pout—she always made a 'hm' noise while doing it.
"Don't turn your back to him too fast, you have to give 'em a chance!" She insisted.
"I'm not saying he's a bad person, he's caring and compassionate and sweet, but he just isn't my type." You retrieved a large wooden noodle spoon and began spinning the slowly-becoming-more-flexible noodles around the pot. You didn't want Cosette to think you despised him, you certainly didn't, he just wasn't the right person for you.
"So he's too lax for your liking, that's the reason you don't like him?" She sounded annoyed.
"Yes."
"Honey, that's what you need in life." Your eyebrows furrowed as you pushed the phone back up—it had begun slipping.
"What do you mean?"
"You're so uptight, you need to learn to loosen up and have some fun! I thought you were having fun yesterday, was I wrong?"
You didn't want to answer her question so you elected to ignore it. "I need someone who'll understand that life isn't just about living your everyday life, it's about making your life worth something."
"And you think Mark hasn't impacted anybody?" You didn't respond. "I think you're just denying you like him because you don't want me to know."
"No, I'm denying it because I don't like him, and I can't see us having a future together," you replied shortly. "Again, he's a great guy, but just not my type."
Cosette sighed. "Fine, but if you do start to like him, you'll tell me right?"
"Goodbye Cosette," you pulled the phone away from your ear, pausing in your stirring. You could hear her quiet bye before you ended the call and set the phone on the counter beside the stove.
You thought about what she said as you taste-tested a noodle, judging they needed about 5 more minutes—you were distracted by Cosette and forgot to set a timer, thus you now had to take a guess on how long to cook the spaghetti. In a way, she was right. It depended on what light you viewed Mark in, but he could be taken as a large impact on many people's lives, something you strived to be but not in the same way. You didn't really view him that way, you only saw him as a goofy guy that was making his way in life by playing games and trying to keep people happy.
Mark's P.O.V.
(Y/N) was an interesting girl. Not interesting in a bad way, just a bit of a mystery. She seemed to enjoy getting dunked in the water for a little bit, then it was like she just stopped and went back to being uptight. Uptight, yeah that's a good word to describe her.
Why was she so unwilling to simply enjoy life? She always looked to be doing something with her time, did she ever relax? There was so many questions I had about her, I just couldn't think of any answers. I didn't know her backstory, where she came from, who raised her, if she experienced any traumatic events. That made figuring her out hard.
I liked her—no not like that—she was a nice woman, she just looked at the world through a different peep-hole than me. Maybe I could convince her to view the world from my angle, just for a little bit. I mean, how much fun has she had in the last week? I doubt it was much more than what happened at the beach.
I smiled to myself while I lay on the couch, Chica laying on top of me with her snout touching my cheek. That should be my goal, to show (Y/N) how much fun life is if you live a little. How should I do that? Along with that question, I also had to think about my videos. I couldn't just put them on hold, so maybe this little goal could be a side one, one I work for when I can but don't bend all the way backwards to accomplish.
I tried to get up but Chica didn't move, instead getting herself comfier on my torso. "Chicaaaaa," I whined, trying to push her off. But she just looked up at me with innocent eyes and stayed where she was. "You bitch." She snorted.
She finally hopped off me and I was free to get up, which I gladly did. I found my phone and looked for my message chain with (Y/N). Maybe I could start today, make her see life is about having fun and not just taking everything as it is.
ME: Hey!
It took her a few minutes to respond, much like the last time we talked via text.
(Y/N): How are you doing, Mark?
She was always so formal over text, it confused me. There was always periods/question marks after her sentences, like she still needed to treat this as professionally as possible.
ME: Pretty good :) Did you get sunburned?
(Y/N): Fortunately, no. I'm surprised, as I didn't put on sunscreen like you. I trust you're not sun burned either?
ME: Nope, I'm fine
(Y/N): Very good.
ME: Do you need any help with INTF?
Again, there was a pause for her answer. While I waited, I set my phone down and looked in the fridge for food. It was late enough that I should've already eaten supper, but I must've lost track of time and my stomach didn't remind me. A rare occurrence, my stomach being quiet when it's time to eat.
(Y/N): No, I think I'm ok. Thank you though.
(Y/N): It's a surprise for you.
I frowned, my attempt not leading to what I hoped for, but I wouldn't pressure her into hanging out with me. Surprises are good!
ME: Alright, tell me if you need anything!
Did that sound clingy? I hope not. Oooo, there's ham in here!
