Meeting Her

It was like our steps were echoing in my head and all these thoughts of Ben liking his biological mother better than me flooding my head. I raised my hand to knock on this door, but hesitated. I closed my eyes taking a deep breath, then knocked. Ben held onto me tighter as we heard footsteps approaching the door. The door opened and I couldn't believe it.

"Natalie?!" I gasped. She looked at me confused then it clicked, "Oh shit! Amber!" She gasped also. "You live here?" I asked shocked. "Yeah, what are you doing here?" She asked just as shocked. Now Natalie is someone Levi and I grew up with kind of. All 3 of us were in foster care together and even had the same foster parents at one point. I haven't seen her since I was 15 I think. She looks..... okay.... I mean it didn't look like she's on drugs. I definitely see her in Ben.

"Momma!" We heard a little girl holler. Out came this little girl, "who is it momma!" She cheesed. I looked down at Ben, he held onto me tight. He looked so freaked out. Natalie picked up the little girl. "How have you been? I thought you moved away with your husband?" She asked confused. "We did but..... um..." tears swelled up in my eyes. "Oh. I can't imagine how hard it is for you to be here since Levi..." She said with a sympathetic look. "Yeah... But. Shit.... I can't believe this...." "Amber are you okay?" She asked. "Mom, it's okay." Ben said comforting me. I took a deep breath, "I'm here with Levi's son." I said. I could see her just go pale in the face. She looked down at Ben in complete shock. "This... this is Levi' s son?" She asked with tears in her eyes. "I adopted him after Levi died." I said. "Hi." Ben said shyly. She covered her mouth in complete disbelief. "Hi.... Oh wow." She said wipping tears off her face. "Oh god, come inside please!" She said inviting us in. We inside and her house was okay, I mean it's the ghetto but it wasn't trashed or stinky.

We sat on the couch, and Ben still had a hold of me. "I can't believe this." She kept looking at Ben. Ben has always been shy, so he started to kind of hide behind me. "You're okay baby." I told him, kissing his head. "He looks just like his daddy." She said. "Yeah, acts like him too." I giggled, admiring my baby boy. "You know, though I wasn't fit to be a mom to him, I was always afraid he was put into foster care. I'm glad you adopted him." She said wipping her tears. " I wasn't aware that Levi had a baby till he died so it all just hit us at once, but he's my mommas boy." I smiled. "I don't even know what to say... do I apologize, cause I did make such stupid stupid desicions! Ugh. I will always be mad at myself for all that." She sniffled. "Well, I don't think we're really here for any of that." I said looking at Ben. He shook his head agreeing with me, "I mean he has a really good life and he.... I mean he's our baby. I know you birthed him but he's always been.... us. We're going through a lot so we decided to take time to see where we came from. He's always known about Levi, he knows Levi is his dad but you were always the question in his head. Even as a smaller child he'd ask why does he have 2 daddy s but one mommy. He's always been curious about you." I said. "I'm glad you gave him things I couldn't." She said giving us a quick smile.
"How long have you been clean?" I ask softly, not wanting to push any buttons. She wipped her face, "I've been clean almost 4 years. I got pregnant again and I refuses to lose another baby. I hated myself for a long time after I had Ben. So I got clean, and stayed clean." She said. "How's it feel to have another sister?" I giggled. He threw his head back groaning, jokingly. "Now I have 3 sisters." He said. "You have 2 girls?" Natalie asked. "Yeah they're back home with my mom." I said. "Your mom?!" She asked surprised. I gave her the whole run down of the situation. "Wow, good for her." She said. "So what's her name?" I asked. "This is Paiton." She smiled. Paiton hid behind Natalie, " Baby, come here. Meet your brother." She said. Paiton shyly hopped onto the ground, Ben stood up, " Hi Paiton." He said. She just hugged him. It was so cute! Natalie and I were just gushing over how cute it all was. "She's wild, so watch out. She'll try to fight you." Natalie giggled.

"So... am I going to be able to see him?" She asked. I took a deep breath, looking at Ben. "I don't know right now. It's something we'll talk about. The original plan was he was gonna meet you then once he turned 18 he could decide to whether or not to have a relationship with you. But you can give me your number and we can have another long discussion about it." I said. She nodded, " I understand completely." She said guilty. "So, what's your favorite thing to do Ben?" She asked eager, knowing this maybe the only time she sees him for a long time. "Um. I like to watch cartoons and I have a lot of fun at school." He said unsure. "He's really into science. He struggles a bit with history but his sissy helps him a lot. Tell her the sports you're gonna play next school year." I told him. "Baseball and basketball. Maybe football." He said. "No. We talked about football, not till you are older." I told him. "But momma! All my friends are playing!" He whined. "Well that's not my problem. My son will not suffer from getting concussions at the age of 10. Your brain is still developing and I don't want you to damage it. End of discussion." I told him. Natalie giggled nervously. "Your a really good mom Amber." She smiled. "Thanks, I don't feel like it all the time but motherhood is hard." I said kissing Ben's head. "Come on, tell her more about you." I told Ben. He sighed then thought, next thing I knew he was rumbling on and on, like Levi use to do. Him and Paiton started to talk, he was good with her.
