If Jessica could admit one thing, it would be that she learned more about herself that night than she did in her seventeen years of existence.
The most that she learned was that in her lack of experience in speaking to the male population that aged similar to her, she wasn't that bad. Yeah, she almost snorted while laughing when he spoke of the time he nearly fell in a pile of poop, but she didn't feel like an awkward Egyptian duck. She felt like Jessica. Not like how she felt around Linda or other people. She felt a wave of comfort, as if she had known him for a really long time and not like she had just met him a few hours ago.
Sitting on the balcony outside his room, they stargazed and talked about random things that came to mind. At first it was school, then previous relationships (which didn't take long to stray from), then music; while she enjoyed the likes of Halsey, Dua Lipa and Beyonce, he preferred Bruno Mars and The Weeknd.
"I have a confession. I have never been in a real relationship." He said after a bout of silence, "there's just this one girl. We've been friends for as long as I can remember and I'm not sure how to tell her how I feel, see she..she is kind of out of my league, I mean she's staying with my brother's best friend tonight and I wrote a letter but-"
"Read it." Jessica said. Looking at him with a keen interest.
"Rosie," he began and looked at Jessica then back onto the page, "Each time I see you, I stop breathing. The smallest of things take me back to you. The smell of lavender, the notes I find in almost all my books; they all lead me back to you. The way you tuck your hair behind your ear makes me want to caress your cheek, Rosie you're my best friend and I love you."
Jessica found herself at a loss for words. She had never met anyone like Grant; spewing his emotions on paper like some poet. He was a man in touch with his creative side (even though some didn't really make sense to her, the effort counted) which didn't just make him cute. He had just moved up a notch on Jessica's scale that she had made as a mental note when they met. No longer was he cute and dumb, he was now attractive and artistic.
She wondered what Rosie would think of the letter, if he'd ever give it to her. But then she thought to herself, nowhere in the letter had he said anything about what he felt toward her, the latter of the letter stated he loved her but words prior to that said best friend.
"You need to be more direct with her. Yes, you stop breathing when you see her...So do you have asthma that you stop breathing? Maybe Rosie isn't like me and will fall for you the moment you say the letter but you need to say those three words and possibly not have the words best friend before that."
"You mean just say, 'I love you'?"
She cocked up a brow, "If that's where you intend on going, but I meant, 'I like you' but yeah, you get what I'm saying?"
Grant didn't say anything else for he didn't know what time say. He had never met anyone like Jessica before. She may have appeared shy and unsure of herself when he met her, but she wasn't that at all. He saw now that she was not afraid to give her opinion even when it was deemed as something not meant to be said.
He stared at her in admiration and she picked it up as well, looking back at him and smiling.
