The atmosphere in the restaurant was stuffy and comfy and the smell of home brew was all that could be smelled and combined with the savoury scent of bacon made Grant's stomach grumble.
She was already there, sitting at a table with her face in her phone. His heart was racing, he didn't know if this was right. He lied to Jessica and he could tell that she sensed it as well but Rose, she was and always will be his best friend and now that she too had feelings for him, he felt that he wanted to hear her out and maybe even scoop her outburst of the previous night and put it under the rug.
He stood by the table and waited for her to acknowledge him but she seemed too focused on her cellphone to pay him any attention. "Hey, can I have this?" He asked, referring to her coffee, "Yeah, sure."
He took the cup and only then had she realised what she did. "Wait, no!"
When she saw it was Grant she smiled, stood up and gave him a hug while saying, "I'm so glad you came." Even though, I suggested this?, he thought but didn't voice it.
He took his seat opposite her and a waitress came, "Are you ready to order?"
They ended up ordering the birthday combo and extra chips just because. "Look," Rosie began, "I meant what I said last night about the way I feel toward you and it's not just the movie. I knew for a while but I just wouldn't face it and you know I love you G."
She started eating from her fries and waited in hopeful anticipation for what he would say. She didn't care that he and whatever her name was were in the process of whatever. All that mattered was that he was here, in this restaurant with her and not whatever her name is. She smiled at him and he smiled back. He took her hand in his and rubbed the back of her thumb with his.
She looked so hopeful but Grant didn't want to upset Jessica, she was the first person whom he could not only connect with but also who he felt something towards and despite it being only two days, what he felt for her was strong.
Taking a chip from the side plate he started, "Rosie, my darling and best friend and person who I will always care for, I'm sorry to say this but I don't feel the same way. I'm happy right now with Jessica."
"But she's not...she doesn't even know you like I do," her voice was beginning to raise and her pulse was about to erupt this was clearly not the way she had wanted things to go down, "What does she have that I don't, I'm obviously prettier than her and I have a lot more personality than her. She's such a hermit Grant, why? I need to know. Like, right now I want to be happy for you but you've known me your whole life."
Grant ate another skinny fry and thought about what to say but before he could say anything a voice from behind him said, "You're such an asshole!" Before he knew a girl came up to their table, took his milkshake that was half full and emptied it over his head.
"What the hell?" He yelled before he saw what was happening, it was Jessica's friend and Jessica whose eyes became filled with melancholy but also disappointment.
She wasn't crying, she wasn't saying anything, all that she had was a despondent look in her eyes and finally a tear fell when she turned and walked out with her friend apologising for the commotion that had occurred.
He took a tissue and began to wipe his face, "At least now that she's out the way we can-"
"No Rosie!" Grant announced before taking out a R100 note to pay for the bill, standing up and walking out and also not caring for Rosie who called after him.
He made a mistake going to Wimpy to meet Rosie while he had someone who could be more than just a potential friend. He didn't think she would want to speak to him or be on any terms of a relationship with him but that didn't mean he wasn't going to try.
