Jessica was still shook at what happened with Linda, but that was something she was expecting and to say she was disappointed would be an overstatement. She and Linda would need to talk about this but for now, Jessica chose to stay upset.
They had walked to her house, a good distance from his too and suddenly they were both awkward Egyptian ducks neither spoke instead they walked and both kept their thoughts to themselves; the sense of comfort and familiarity thrown out the window (or in this case in the air and forgot to come back down).
"Well, this is me." She said, her hands behind her back with her legs crossed as she stood watching him with her lips pressed together.
Grant's mouth opened to say something but he didn't know what to say and closed it once more.
God, this is so awkward! They both thought.
"So, er...do you wanna come in?"
"Are your parents home?"
"Well yes but they're asleep and we'll be quite."
"How do you know I won't try anything while we're in your room?" He said, his lips curving upwards at the corners to produce a smirk.
That was all it took for her to feel comfortable again and she walked toward him flicking his shoulder.
"Ouch." He said, though she knew he didn't mean it.
They walked towards the front door and while he had expected her parents to be waiting for her on the couch in the living room with a lecture on coming home later than the time she should've, everything was quiet. The house was dark since the lights were off but that didn't stop him from looking at pictures that shone in the moonlight as they made their way to her room.
Once they reached her room, she closed the door behind them and made sure to be as quiet as a mouse about it too.
After turning on the light, Grant gazed around her room, his jaw dropped as he looked from wall to wall. He walked towards one of the walls and felt the paper that had messy paint distinctively painted on it, it was adorned with different patterns and colours with the finished piece to be a masterpiece.
"You did this?"
She walked closer towards him, her hand on her shoulder rubbing it, "Yeah, it's a hobby of mine, it's nothing to a lot of people but I like it. Sometimes when I look at it, it's as if I see something in the majestic mess of colours and paint and patterns."
She sat down on her carpet and leaned on the foot of her bed, Grant joined her.
"It's a wonderful talent. I wish I could be anything like that. Creative I mean."
"But you're a sports person, guessing from all your trophies and I'm not really into sport."
"Maybe you just haven't found a sport that suits you."
She shrugged and leaned her head on his shoulder, the move seemed to catch him by surprise since he tensed up but he soon became relaxed.
"Do you ever... I don't know think that if you were a different person, your life would be so much better than it is now?"
He didn't know how to reply to her question. He saw his life as a good one and didn't feel that anything needed to be changed.
"Why would you say so?"
"It's just that...I've always been the girl in the shadows or the one behind her friends. My own friend abandoned me tonight because I'm too boring for her. Do you think I'm boring?"
She moved a bit away from him to see his face when he responded. He looked her directly in the eye and said, "I don't think you're boring. You're interesting and I'm sure your friend who left you didn't see it because she wasn't a real friend."
"Maybe you're right." She said pursing her lips, looking at him.
Grant didn't know what it was, maybe it was the fact that her lips looked more plump in the light of her room or that it was the mood of the room but he leaned over and kissed her. It was a sweet graze on her lips and Jessica while she was surprised by this, pulled him towards her and kissed him back but suddenly a thought came to her and she pushed him back.
Just as she was about to say something a loud knocking came from her door. "Jess, are you home?"
Her eyes widened and she looked at Grant. "You need to go, now."
More knocking, "Yes, Daddy I'm home."
"Why is this door locked?"
"I just undressed and didn't want to be disturbed!" She said, opening her window and thanking her father for not putting burglar bars on it.
Grant was halfway out the window when he said with a halt,"Wait, I don't have your number."
"Now is not the time Grant." She said pushing him out and closing the window just in time too since her father couldn't wait any longer and started knocking with a rage that made it seem that he would break down the door.
Quickly she put on her furry night gown and rushed to the door.
He looked around the room and then at his daughter. “Did you have company?"
"What? Me, company? No daddy." She said, raising her hands in the air all too dramatically.
"How did you get home?"
"I had a lift."
"But, I was sure I heard-"
"I was on the phone, now can you please leave so that I can go sleep since it is late and all." She said, looking at him and clasping her hands together in front of her stomach.
"I thought you were staying at Linda's house." He said gruffly, scratching the back of his head.
"She left without me okay. And then I got a lift home."
Not completely believing her but also wanting to go bavk to sleep, he obliged walking out of the room and closing the door.
When he was gone, she ran towards the window and peered outside to find that no one was there and suddenly she remembered their kiss but she soon found herself sad inside, she wouldn't see him again, he didn't even have her phone number.
