He was seated on the pavement outside her house. Her parents were home and he didn't think it would be a good idea to go inside and make introductions.
A car pulled up and Jessica got out, her eyes sparkled and the corners of her mouth were turned upwards in a smile, she noticed him as she got out and after those few seconds, her smile faltered.
"Hey." He said.
With her lips pressed together, in an awkward smile, she sat down beside Grant.
Neither said anything. Neither knew what to say.
Though, Grant was the first to speak.
"I'm sorry Jessica. I lied to you, I should've been straight with how I felt and with what we were. I-"
"You can stop. You're not sorry for what you did Grant. And that's okay, you might feel bad about the fact that you lead me on and I was pissed at you but I got over it. These past three days were really enjoyable, the most fun I've had in a long time but I've realised that we were never meant to be."
At those last words, Grant begged to differ. He had grown to love Jessica, despite it being three days.
"No Jessica, I made the mistake of meeting her and lying to you about it. I've been honest about my feelings for you," he took her hand in his and turned her chin for her to face him, with pleading eyes, he continued, "I've had wonderful times this past weekend as well and I want to have more with you. I lo-"
"No." Jessica stood, "I can't do this with you Grant. That girl will forever be in your life and as much as I- I can't, I'm sorry."
"Jessica, please understand. I went there to tell Rosie that you and I are together but that me and her could still be friends. Jessica, I never meant to hurt you."
"Well guess what? You did. God, I'm so stupid. Why didn't you tell me about you meeting her the first time? Why'd you stay quiet about it? I don't feel like I can trust you anymore Grant and this is just a small thing but what if they'll be bigger things that could hurt me even more? Would you still keep quiet? Maybe we should stay as friends."
She began to walk away but that didn't stop him. "You know, I know that you're afraid of this Jessica. Afraid of what we could be, afraid of whether we will be happy or not."
Jessica turned around, eyes brimming with tears. Her heart beating so hard against her chest, she could hear it in her ears and feel it in her veins. Grant was sure that he'd made a breakthrough when she didn't answer.
She walked toward him and held the side of his face before pulling him down for a kiss. But just as it got good (for the both of them) she backed away.
"Goodbye Grant."
