Annabeth
Surprisingly, the bubble didn’t pop when it reached the surface, so Percy, Jackie, Leo and Annabeth had stayed dry all the way to shore. They had emerged from the ocean near a groin. The waves pounded the rocks. The beach was practically deserted which Annabeth didn’t take as a good sign considering it was Miami Beach in July.
When they arrived, Jackie sat down and exhaled, “That was tiring.”
Percy collapsed beside, “Tell me about, one girl is easy, but three people?” He and Jackie were both sandy, but they didn’t seem to care. Maybe it was a Poseidon thing?
Annabeth gave Percy a playful glare, “I’m not that heavy Seaweed Brain.”
Leo frowned confusedly, “Seaweed Brain?”
Jackie rolled her eyes and gestured for Leo to come sit with her. Annabeth sat next to Percy, Leo sat down next to Jackie and pulled some stuff out of his tool belt to fiddle with. His fingers moved at the pace of a machine, twisting, pulling and clinking bits of metal.
“So where is this Thetis, I feel like a sea nymph with the name of an Energy Drink.”
“Excuse me? I am not an energy drink. If anything I’m spring water.”
Annabeth gasped and turned to find the sea nymph right behind them. She looked like a typical beach girl, with a bikini, and a playful smile which made Annabeth agitated. She had dark hair; dark eyes and a tan so dark it made Annabeth feel sick.
“Well that was easy” Jackie muttered.
“Pardon dear? I’m afraid I don’t like people who mutter.” Thetis scorned.
The nymph smiled, she had her hands on her hips and he leg cocked like a swimwear model.
“So you’re Thetis?” Percy interrupted standing up. Annabeth gestured for the others to stand up.
“Of course my dear, I’m a Neried in fact. A sea nymph” She turned to face Annabeth, “Why? Isn’t it lovely to have a daughter of the wisdom goddess in my presence?”
She studied Thetis, “You too, I see you love being out in the sun.’
But she wasn’t being rude. Thetis’ tan was horrible, she was brown and she looked like as soon as she got out of her cradle she crawled onto a tan bed. Thetis gave Annabeth a snooty smile,
“Yes.”
Thetis then turned to Jackie and Percy, “And the children of Poseidon, well how wonderful to meet new broods of the sea.”
“New?” Percy questioned.
“What the Hades?” Jackie muttered.
Thetis was really beginning to annoy Annabeth, her bubbly personality made Annabeth wonder whether she was sane or not, but she lastly met gazes with Leo.
“Ah, a son of the forge, it’s been a long time since I’ve met one of Hephaestus’ children. I raised your father you know.” Thetis said to Leo patting him on the head as if he were a dog.
Leo looked uncomfortable, “Uh, personal space lady.”
Thetis’ eyes narrowed for a second before returning to normal. “Poor thing, he was thrown from Olympus by that wretch Hera.”
Hera…Annabeth hated Hera, she had brought nothing but trouble to Annabeth ever since she appeared to Annabeth in the Labyrinth, which included taking away Percy’s memories, sending him to Camp Jupiter and bringing her Jason instead. But Thetis didn’t seem quite peachy either when it came to personality.
“I know what you mean.” Annabeth said.
Thetis flipped her hair out of her eyes. “Do tell me what you are doing here though?”
Leo gulped, “My dad’s- Hephaestus’ forge hammer has been stolen, and we were wondering if you knew anything about it.”
Thetis placed her hand on her chin and thought for a minute and then answered Leo.
“Oh yes. A boy passed through here asking for the armour which your father made for my poor lamb chop Achilles.”
“Armour? What armour?” Jackie asked bravely. She had been keeping it down for a while after Thetis had snapped at her.
“Oh, the mumbler…” Thetis snarled referring to Jackie. “Well, Hephaestus made impeccable armour for my Achilles and it is one of the most powerful sets of armour ever made, it is fit for a god. It also included a shield.”
Percy didn’t look happy with the way Thetis was treating Jackie neither did Leo, he looked like he was about to burst into flames.
“It was built so that it would instantly fit whoever wore it. And the shield was fantastically beautiful as it was powerful.”
“So you gave the armour to the boy?” Annabeth asked.
“Oh yes, it would have been rude not to.”
Percy looked like he was about to explode now, “You gave armour to a thief! The bane of Hephaestus… the kid is gathering weapons for Hephaestus’ bane…”
“Mimas. This isn’t good. If another giant is rising…” Annabeth finished for him.
Leo looked pale, Leo usually mentioned that he didn’t care about what his dad did, but nobody believed him. And now, Leo looked worried about him, which was a rare sight for an impish kid like Leo.
“What was his name? Where was he heading?”
Thetis regarded Leo as that of Pegasus poop. “His name was Chase Endicott, a son of Ares I believe. Before heading off, he mentioned San Diego…”
“When did he leave?” Jackie blurted out.
Thetis looked like she was about to blow up. This lady really had problems with kids.
“An hour ago. If you leave now, you could catch up with him.”
Percy looked relieved, “Thanks.”
She smiled a blinding smile, “No need son of Poseidon, it is an honour.”
She regarded Annabeth, Leo and Jackie with a horrible look. Leo just smirked at her.
“Let’s go guys.” Jackie said with a smile.
Though something told Annabeth that Thetis wasn’t done. As they started down the beach Annabeth turned to meet glances with Thetis.
Thetis smiled evilly at them. Annabeth knew that she shouldn’t have trusted the nymph, she was dirty water. Annabeth recognized Thetis as an enemy as soon as she saw her, it was a good thing she knew though, because she ripped the backpacks off the others and dropped her laptop just a torrent of sea water wrapped around the four and dragged them towards the water which was now whipped into a dangerous whirlpool.
