Doctor Who: Apple Trees

Meet Jake Howard

The Doctor looks at JJ right as she says, "...I mean, that's the question everyone always asks you, isn't it?" Jake is mesmerized by this woman. He can tell that she is slightly taller than him, & she is obviously tougher. She looks like she could've killed a man once...Although, she probably has.

"JJ, why are you late?" the Doctor questioned. "Sorry. I just...went on a little adventure..." JJ began. The Doctor looked at her as if she was about to reveal their secret.  "...Around campus," JJ finished. "Oh!" the Doctor said, relieved. JJ asked slyly, "Where did you think I was?" She obviously knew the answer to that question, but she just wanted to be really cheeky. "I don't know. You seem to get in a lot of trouble when I'm not around," the Doctor answered. JJ stood looking at her father; she looked at her dad like he was an idiot. 

"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree," JJ snapped back. However, she said it kind of slyly. 

It was at this moment that JJ looked over at Jake. His big, brown, puppy dog eyes met her stormy grey ones. JJ gave a seductive wink at Jake. Jake looked down at his desk; Jake smirked, as it was his first time that a girl ever actually showed any interest in him. 

JJ looked back at her father; Jake's smile fell, from his face, into a frown. He felt, almost, as if he was missing her gaze. 

"Alright, where do I sit?" JJ asked her father, who had just watched the whole action between JJ & Jake. The Doctor took a second to look at Jake. He looked him up & down, & smiled. "Next to the one who you just winked at," the Doctor replied. The Doctor smiled even more, & walked back around to his desk. JJ stood reluctantly, as she at first didn't want to sit next to him. JJ turned around to face her father, who was now sitting in his chair. 

"Do I really have to sit with him? I mean, he's not really...my type," JJ said to her father. "What's the problem with him?" the Doctor questioned. "You know, he's just..." JJ began to answer. She paused & looked around them. She finally whispered the Doctor's ear, "...human." "You'll be fine," the Doctor said as he got up & pushed JJ to her desk. 

JJ, once again, was reluctant to sit down. After about a minute, JJ finally sat down to next to this...human. Although, no one knows why JJ doesn't like humans, not even her father.

As JJ took her seat, Jake inspected her. He stared at her, as if she couldn't possibly exist, but she does.

JJ looked out of the corner of her eye; she could see Jake staring at her. She turned her head to look at him, but just as she did, Jake turned his head away to make it look like he wasn't staring. JJ turned her head back to face forward. JJ eventually lowered her head to look at her lap, & she smiled.

Jake began to stare down at the paper on his desk; he stared at it in a trance-like state. The world had gone silent to him. All he could think about was this mystery girl. He wanted to know all about her. He wanted to know her life story, & what exactly JJ stood for. All of sudden, the Doctor's voice came crashing into Jake's head like a lightning storm.

"...Now, this lab I'm going to have you do with your table partner-" the Doctor said as he looked directly at Jake & JJ. "-Feel free to get started."

Jake looked up rapidly, realizing he was not paying any attention to the discussion. He had to ask this mystery girl about the assignment...how embarrassing. He typically paid attention. What had this new girl done to him? 

He finally got the courage to ask her, "Uh, what are we doing?" "Well, while you were having a nice little daydream, father was telling us about the lab that we're doing," she replied. She looked at him as if he knew what lab she was talking about...of course he didn't. "We're doing a lab?" he questioned. "Wow! You really were out of it weren't you?" JJ asked in a way that was almost sly. "Apparently," Jake responded. "Well then-" JJ began, "-we have to correctly identify the genetic disease."
