Only Know You Love Him When You Let Him Go

JJ re-entered the TARDIS. Her father just sat & watched as she walked in. He had a face that seemed filled with disappointment. 

"Why?" the Doctor asked simply. "Why what?" JJ asked back. "Why don't you want him to come?" he asked. JJ turned her head to look at the console. She just stared at it for so long that it seemed like she was expecting the console to give an answer for her. 

"Sweetie-" her dad began "-I remember when you were a kid. When we first started travelling, all you wanted was a companion. You were perfectly fine with travelling with people from different planets, but now that a human wants to travel with you, you turn him down. Why?"

JJ brought her head back up to look at her father. "Because that's just it. He's a human-" JJ finally answered "-Humans don't have a long life span, & travelling throughout time & space isn't a piece of cake. It's dangerous & scary. Would I love to travel with him? Of course I would. He seems absolutely fantastic, but I don't want him to risk his life just to travel with us."

The Doctor couldn't believe what he was hearing. His sweet little princess was scared to have someone with them because she didn't want them to die in her care. "You must really love him," the Doctor stated. "What?" JJ questioned. "JJ, I've to come to realize that you know you love someone when you let them go," the Doctor finished. "Maybe I do. I don't know. I've never known what loving someone is really like. All I know is that I feel protective over him & that is why I can't let him come with us. Because he will get killed, or I will watch as he slowly decays over time, & I don't want that," said JJ. 

The Doctor pulled his little princess into his arms for a warm embrace. She held him as if she were scared that when she let go, he would be gone. "I love you, daddy," JJ stated. "I love you too, princess," said her father.
