Chapter 9 – I take that back I’m a terrible babysitter…
When I got home that night I nearly passed out on the couch from exhaustion, that basketball practice literally killed me. It didn’t help that Colin kept laughing at me on the way home about how out of shape I am, maybe I should start running…
I didn’t get to sit on the couch long though, a few minutes later my mom called us all for supper. It was pasta night which I was extremely excited about considering it’s my favorite food. Everyone took their places at the table silently and dished up their plate, except for Luke my mom did his.
“Miss. Miller is looking for a babysitter for her boys tomorrow night and asked if you would do it,” Mom said I looked over at her raising an eyebrow.
“Uh, no,” I muttered; there was no way in hell I was going to babysit those kids, they were like hell to watch. Not to mention the oldest hits on me every time he sees me and he’s only eleven.
“Can I come?” Luke asked excitedly.
“Uh, no,” I repeated.
“Why not? I like playing with them!” he explained before stuffing his face with fettuccini alfredo.
“If you come that means I have an extra kid to watch, besides I’m not doing it. Do you remember what happened last time?” I asked them raising an eyebrow.
“They tied you up to a chair and through eggs at you,” Colin laughed grinning like an idiot across the table from me.
I sighed, “Yeah, that’s what happened.”
Ashton snickered and I turned and glared at him. “That actually happened?”
“Oh yeah, it was so funny!” Luke added.
“You were there?” Ashton laughed harder and I felt like ripping my hair out.
Luke giggled and nodded. “It was my idea,” he whispered trying to be secretive only everyone heard him. Luke and Ashton exchanged a high five and I frowned at the table.
“So will you do it?” Mom asked as if whatever we were just talking about she completely missed.
“You do need the money,” Dad said with a shrug.
“I have a job,” I told him.
“And when was the last time you worked there?”
I thought for a second. I honestly don’t even remember. “Umm, last week?” I said only it came out as more of a question.
“Exactly,” Dad said smiling. “Take the job, Alex.”
“Fine,” I muttered.
The next evening my mom was still at work when I was supposed to go over to the Miller’s house so Ashton drove me there. The awkward tension in the car was thick as Ashton drove along avoiding eye contact with me. “So…” Ashton said, “what time do you want me to pick you up?”
“Well Miss. Miller said she’d be home by ten so you can come then,” I told him.
“Alrighty,” Ashton said nodding.
The rest of the drive was silent.
Ashton parked outside of Miss. Miller’s house and I climbed out of his truck. “See yeah!” I muttered closing the door.
“Bye!” Ashton gave me an awkward wave and I smiled before tuning and walking up the sidewalk towards the house. I knocked on the door and glanced behind me to see Ashton still sitting there. I raised an eyebrow at him before gesturing for him to go away. Ashton held his hands up in defeat before driving away, I was pretty sure he was laughing to himself.
