Chapter Ten – Someone's looking bangable tonight!
For the rest of the week I went to basketball practice, only to make my dad happy though considering I knew how much this meant to him. I decided that maybe I should try a little harder so when my dad comes to watch I’m not completely terrible. Besides the fact that I was practicing for basketball my mother was planning my birthday party this weekend. She thought it would be fun to invite our entire high school to my birthday; frankly I was pretty sure that all of us weren’t going to fit in my house so I told my mom that I would exclude the freshman’s because I felt weird inviting them when I barely know them.
Ashton and Colin were pumped for my birthday; this will probably be one of the only parties we’ll have that actually have parent supervision. I knew my parents would be watching everyone like hawks.
“So I was thinking,” Mom started, “We should go to the store today and buy some chips and stuff for your party tomorrow.” She was looking at me hopefully.
“Good idea,” I told her and she smiled happily. She was probably happy that I was actually willing to socialize with people instead of sitting in my room by myself. I guess a parent might worry though if their child never goes out anywhere. Most teens my age are trying to get into bars, I’m trying to balance my friends, family, Ashton, basketball, and my creepy teacher at the same time; that’s gotta be difficult for anyone.
“Maybe we can buy you a new outfit to wear for it,” she said and I nodded absentmindedly.
I glanced between the boys who were intent on watching a football game and I rolled my eyes before looking over at my mom who wore the same expression as me. “Go change, Alex and then we’ll head out,” Mom said.
I looked down at my sweats and sighed before heading towards the stairs. “One of you boys is going to have to come to help push the cart,” Mom was telling them. All of them nearly at the same time screamed dibs out before touching their noses.
“Ashton lost!” Luke screamed laughing at him and I mentally swore in my head, I swear I always get out in these situations.
Half an hour later I was dressed in jeans and an American eagle sweater and heading into the grocery store with my mom and my brothers best friend. My mom told Ashton to grab a cart and follow us down the first isle. Mom walked ahead of both of us grabbing things and putting them in the cart.
“Do you guys always do dibs out when you go shopping?” Ashton asked me walking a little too closely for comfort. I stepped away a little trying not to be too obvious.
“Every time,” I told him with a nod.
“Next time I’ll be ready,” he winked at me. “Not that I don’t enjoy spending time with you.”
I shook my head and tried my best to shrug it off, but then again my red face kind of gave everything away. Ashton chuckled. “It’s funny when you turn red.”
“Mhm thanks,” I mumbled picking up my pace a little so that he couldn’t talk to me anymore.
“Thanks for leaving me behind,” Ashton called making a few people look at us. I ducked my face trying to hide but even when I did that I could still hear his laughter behind me.
An hour later we were done grocery shopping so we headed to the mall. My mom was intent on finding me a bathing suit for the party. I on the other hand wasn’t so happy, and Ashton thought it was hilarious.
We ended up at an expensive swimwear store – that’s what I called it anyway – and I found myself looking through a bunch of different bathing suits. Ashton picked out the ugliest bathing suits I ever seen and begged me to try them on, and finally after I agreed he said, and I quote ‘Nah, you don’t look bangable yet.’
