Nick
There's a song that my dad used to listen to when I was a kid, maybe when I was ten or eleven, that I was singing in my head. I didn't relate to the song back then, but I sure could relate to it now. It was a country song, called, "My Front Porch Looking In," by the band, Lonestar, who also sang the song, "Amazed," that Demi & I danced to at our wedding. They wrote some damn good music, apparently.
I stood on my back porch, but a porch nonetheless, watching the sight inside my house. It's chaotic to say the least. I had a clear view of the kitchen & the dining room as well as part of the family room. My twins, who are exactly two years old today, ran after each other, screaming & laughing at the same time. My cousins, niece & nephews ran with them, doing the exact same thing, while Maddie & Frankie were trying to get them to stop running & screaming. Demi, my wife, was in the kitchen with both of our moms & they were all fussing over placing food on a plate so it looks presentable. My dad & brothers, Joe & Kevin, were blowing up balloons in the dining room, which was quite a sight all on its own. My uncle Josh, I heard behind me, scraping the grill, while my aunt Ang was cleaning off patio furniture. My grandmother was sitting at the counter, holding my newest niece, Alena, who was born last August. I took all of this in, with a smile on my face, while I stood just outside the sliding glass door, hands in my pocket. I love my life. I have the best life & I try not to take any of it for granted.
"Nick!" Demi screamed at me, snapping me out of my trance. She stood a few feet in front of me, holding several packs of disposable plates in her arms, looking as if she may drop them.
I smiled at her & she groaned, impatiently. "What do you need, love?" I asked, taking a deep breath.
"You're standing there with a stupid grin on your face, not doing anything & we have over a hundred people due here within the hour." She whined, speaking loud, her eyes darting around, frantically.
I took a step inside, a smile still firmly planted on my face & took the plates from her, then set them on the table. I took her hand & pulled her to where I was standing. "Come with me, Love."
"Nick, I have so much to do...." She whined, resisting me a little. I turned around & gave her a 'trust me' smile, then she gave in.
Once on the porch, I turned her around to face the inside of our beautiful home in Texas. Yes the party was in Texas & I was grateful so many of our friends & family could come here to celebrate with us. She sighed & I kissed her cheek as I wrapped my arms around her waist. "Now, do me a favor, my love. Look inside there, take a deep breath & just enjoy this moment." I murmured against her ear. I saw her roll her eyes, sighing again, louder this time. Isabella, my niece, who had just turned seven in February, & Mercy were giggling nearby, as they watched their grandpa & uncles blow up balloons. Jerry came into sight, just to smack a balloon out of Uncle Joe's hand as he tried to tie it. That called for a chase as Joe went after Jerry, Jerry screaming like a banshee, making me laugh. "Do you see that beautiful family in there?" I said to Demi, my cheek pressed against her cheekbone. "Three years ago, we didn't think we'd have any kids & now our amazing twins are two years old. Can we just stand here & enjoy our blessings for a moment?" I kissed her cheek again.
I felt Demi relax against me a little, a soft smile on her face. "I have a lot to do still, so how long do I need to stand here with you, doing nothing?" Her head turned toward me, slightly & she was smiling, teasing me.
