Chapter 32

Demi

Dani & Isabella met us in the lobby of the hospital, when we arrived to meet Chloe. The twins each took one of Isabella's hands & walked ahead of us through the hallways.

"Is Mercy gonna let you hold Chloe?" Dani, asked, grinning. Our whole family knew about Mercy's jealous streak when it came to Nick. It had become a joke at this point, but both Nick & I worried that it may not be healthy. At the twins birthday party, was when we both got the feeling that this might not get better. Nick had been holding Alena, who had just fallen & skinned her knee. She was sitting on his lap while Denise bandaged her up. Mercy came stomping over, hands on her hips & looked straight at Nick, a look of anger on her face.

"Why is Alena on your lap?" Mercy asked.

Denise laughed, but Nick looked troubled. "She fell & her daddy wasn't around so we borrowed your daddy. Is that okay?" Denise responded in a calm voice.

Mercy sighed & pushed her tiny lips together. "I guess so." Nick & I both sighed with relief as Denise smiled, thinking everything was fine. I watched Mercy, though & she never once took her eyes off of Nick & Alena. She watched them like a hawk. When Nick kissed Alena's cleaned up booboo, I thought Mercy's head might spin. Her eyes got enormous & her breathing got heavy. When Alena turned to give her uncle Nick a hug, Mercy's little pout got more pronounced. Nick smiled at Mercy over Alena's shoulder, then put Alena down. The moment Alena's feet touched the ground, Mercy moved so she was in front of Nick, reaching up so he could lift her. He did, putting her on his lap.

"Thank you for sharing me with Alena. That was so nice of you. Daddy's very proud of you." Nick said, then kissed her cheek.

"Will you kiss my booboo, Daddy?" Mercy asked, batting her lashes at Nick. I stifled a laugh. Damn, she was definitely a girl. She was using her wiles already.

"You don't have a booboo." Nick said.

Mercy clicked her tongue. "I know dat. I mean if I get a booboo." She rolled her eyes & Nick shook his head as he looked up at his mom. Denise was looking at him, clearly amused & clearly glad she had boys to raise.

"Of course I would." Nick answered. He looked up at me & we gave each other a look, much like the look we gave each other in the car earlier.

Now, as we walked with Dani, Nick & I exchanged another look. Nick took a deep breath. "I'm going to hold my new niece & I will also have a talk with my daughter."

"I wonder how she's going to react to her new baby brother." Dani said.

"She isn't as jealous with boys. It's just girls." I watched the twins walking ahead of us, looking so small next to Isabella. "Maybe it's because..." My words trailed off as I thought my thought was stupid. Both Nick & Dani were looking at me, waiting. I laughed. "It's probably stupid but maybe it's because of all the times Nick gets stopped by female fans who want a picture. Mercy has seen it a lot, so maybe it has added to her insecurities when it comes to other girls. I mean some of them have been aggressive & some have ignored me & the kids, completely. So maybe Mercy has picked up on that." I shrugged my shoulders.

Nick put his arm around me & kissed the side of my head. "That makes sense. You're so smart, Love. That's a pretty good explanation."

Dani & I laughed. "Well, you might not get a chance to hold Chloe anyway." Dani mentioned.

We both looked at her, confused. "Why not?" Nick asked.

Dani grinned, shaking her head. "Joe has hardly put her down. He is smitten."
