Demi

My eyes snapped open as I felt an overwhelming strength come over me. My adrenaline kicked in & I felt stronger than I've ever felt before. I got up out of the water, grabbed Nick under his arms & started pulling him. Jerry came over & tried to help. He actually was helping, thankfully. Mercy was standing on the bottom step of the pool, crying hard. "Mercy, I need you to go in the kitchen & get mommy's phone off the counter. We need to call 911." I said, my voice strained as I pulled Nick's heavy body out of the pool. I got him almost all the way out & I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw Mercy run into the house. "Jerry, do you remember when we talked about calling 911?" I asked. He nodded at me. "Can you go get the phone from Mercy & call 911?" I was out of breath, deciding Nick was out of the water enough. Just his feet were still in the water, now. Jerry had gone to get the phone.

I went to stand up to grab Nick's feet, when I felt a sharp pain in my side. "You've got to be kidding me." I groaned, grabbing my side. I felt a little light headed, seeing a few spots in my vision, so I sat back down beside Nick's shoulders. My head was pounding, now. Great. Just great. I put my face down by Nick's mouth. "Please, baby. Please be breathing. Don't you dare leave me." I whispered when I was by his face. I was so relieved when I felt a tiny warm sensation on my cheek. I looked up to see Mercy crying as she stood a few feet away..

"Daddy's breathing, baby. He's gonna be fine. He just fainted. I think Daddy had too much sun today." I said in a hopeful voice. I looked down at Nick's face, so peaceful, looking like he was sleeping. My tears were coming again. "Don't you give up, Nicholas Jerry." I whispered, touching his cheek with my fingers. "I love you, Nick. You hear me? You better open your eyes, Handsome. Our son is going to be here soon. You don't want to miss that." I was crying pretty hard, but trying not to upset the twins any more than they already were.

Jerry was standing beside me & I heard his little voice. "Jerry..... yes... my mommy pulled him outta da pool.... " I looked at Jerry & saw he was on the phone. I held my hand out so I could take the phone.

"Hi, is this 911?" I asked.

"Yes, ma'am. Who am I talking to?" the woman asked.

"Demi. My husband is Nick & he's unconscious, but he's breathing. It's labored, but I can feel it."

"Your son said he was under water, so that's good news that he's breathing. That means he didn't breathe in much water, if any. You saved his life, pulling him from the water."

I was breathing hard now, like I was in labor. The pain in my side was getting worse. "Um... I'm pregnant & I have a pain in my side.... so can you have the ambulance hurry?"

"How far along are you, Demi?"

"28 weeks."

"Okay, I want you to listen to me. Do not move. Stay where you are & I will send a note to the paramedics that are on route. You may have just strained something when you pulled your husband from the pool, but just in case, I want you to hold still. Who else is there with you besides your son?"

"My daughter. She's 4. They're both 4."

"Twins. That's so fun. Do you have another phone?"

"Yes." I looked at Jerry, who had stopped crying, but still looked scared. "Jerry, can you go get Daddy's phone off the chair over there?" I motioned with my hand & watched Jerry run & get the phone, then return to me. I took the phone in my hand, trying to catch my breath. "I don't know who to call."

"Whoever is closest." She said.

"Everyone is at the hospital. My sister in law gave birth this morning. Oh... I know who I'll call...." I put the operator on speaker phone & hit Wilmer's name on Nick's phone. Wilmer answered after two rings. "Wilmer. It's Demi. I need you to come to my house." I explained to Wilmer what was going on, trying not to start crying. "My friend is on his way." I said to the operator, after I disconnected from Wilmer.
