Little Lance yanked out of his mother's grip and ran towards the swing set.

"I'm gonna fly!", he declared.

"Alright sweetie, just be safe", Mrs McClain warned gently, "I'll be over here by the bench."

Mrs McClain sat down at the park bench and pulled out a book.

Lance swung on the swing set, kicking his legs and sending himself higher and higher with each swing.

"Hi Lance."

The boy dug his heels into the ground, halting himself immediately.
He looked at his friend in surprise.

"Keith?"

Keith's face and mop of raven hair was a dirty mess. Playground sand clung mercilessly to his clothes.

"What are you doing here?"

"My mommy said to stay here until she comes back."

Mrs McClain caught sight of the dirty boy and quickly got up from her seat.

She knelt down and took a napkin out of her purse, trying to wipe his face clean.
"How long have you been here, sweetie?"

"I dunno. My mommy brought me here after school."

Mrs McClain froze.

It was Sunday afternoon.

Keith had been there since Friday.

She dug a few dollars out of her purse and handed them to Lance.

"You know where the ice cream man's stand is, right? Go get you two some ice cream to share."

Lance nodded obediently, and ran away with his friend's hand in his.
"Let's see if they have mint!"

Watching her boys leave, Mrs McClain angrily pulled her phone out of her purse.

She dialed a number she called way too often for her tastes.

"Hello", the voice on the other side said.

"Now listen, you ungrateful bitch", Mrs McClain hissed into the receiver, "You know damn well the only reason I don't call child protective services on your ass is because I don't want to tear our sons apart. So I better see you at this park for Keith in ten fucking minutes or I'm changing my mind."

Mrs Kogane hung up.

Mrs McClain sighed, pressing her fingers to her temples.

The boys came running back, both with cones of green ice cream.

"We have mint!", Keith grinned.

"Do you wanna share, Momma?", Lance asked.

"No thank you sweeties. You might want to hurry, though. Keith's mom just called me and said she's coming to get him."
