The Offer Lucy's Been Waiting For
Lucy walked into her third period class, art history. She'd seen Sasha, the new girl. As far as Lucy could tell, Sasha was a popular swan. Not someone who would talk to her. But what was she thinking? Why would the new girl, out of all people, want to talk to Loser Lucy? Lucy sighed, and patted toward the open door. She walked inside. Since they didn't have assigned seats, kids sat with one another, chattering mindlessly. Lucy wished someone would invite her to join their group.
And then, Lucy turned. There was Sasha, sitting alone. She ushered Lucy over. Lucy walked over.
"Hey," Sasha said.
"Um, hi," Lucy said, feeling awkward.
Sasha motioned for Lucy to sit down. She scraped back a chair, and sat, placing her discount purse on the ground.
"You're Lucy, right?" Sasha asked.
Lucy nodded. "Yep, that's me."
"Yeah," Sasha started. "My mom told me about you."
"Your mom... who?" Lucy asked, confused.
"Alison," Sasha answered confidently. "She knows your mom, Aria."
"Oh," Lucy said. She'd heard Alison had a daughter, but had never met her.
"I don't know anyone at this school," Sasha said. Her breath smelled like a mix of mint and strawberry Chapstick. "I was wondering if you'd like to be in my exclusive group."
Lucy looked around, waiting for people to start shouting "You got pranked!" She sucked in her breath, then breathed out again.
"Well," Sasha asked, tapping her long, pink fingernails on the table.
"Yeah... I would love to," Lucy said cautiously.
"Great!" Sasha smiled in a big grin, and turned to face the board just when the second bell rang.
Lucy waited, surely this was a cruel trick. But nothing happened, and pretty soon the period was over. Was it possible that she, Lucy Montgomery, had actually made a friend?
