No One's Safe
Shay froze, a brownie in one hand. "What was that?" she whispered.
"It's probably just Sasha," Troian snapped.
"But how do we know?" Shay insisted.
"Hello!" Ashley called out. "Is anybody there?"
There was nothing.
"Is it gone?" Lucy asked nervously.
Suddenly, there was a loud noise that sounded like a gun shot.
"Oh my god, was that..." Troian stuttered.
"A gun?" Lucy finished.
Shay just stood there, to shell shocked to move. Was somebody going to kill them. The four girls trembled, Ashley so badly, her teeth chattered. There was nothing but silence.
Knock knock knock. The girls all turned to where the sound was coming from.
"That sounds like someone at the back door," Lucy said.
"Well, should we see who it is or not?" Ashley was so scared, her knees were bopping up and down.
"My back door has a window at the top," Lucy said. "We can see who it is without actually opening the door."
The girls all crawled toward the door. Shay was sure they were going to die. When they got there, Shay looked up and saw... Sasha? Huh? What was going on? Was this another cruel prank? Shay quickly opened the door, and Sasha stepped in.
"Oh. Thank god," she yelled sighing with relief. "I-I... that," Sasha stuttered.
"What's going on?" Shay asked.
"Someone's trying to kill me!" Sasha screamed, and than burst into tears.
"Sasha," Shay said slowly, rubbing her shoulders. "What are you talking about?"
Sasha just sobbed. Mascara ran down her cheeks. The other girls waited awkwardly. Shay rubbed Sasha's back, and Lucy went to get her a hot towel and glass of water. After a few minutes, Sasha calmed down, and told the girls what happened. "Okay," she said. "I was going to come, but then my mom made me pick up groceries at Fresh Fields."
Shay nodded understandingly, while the other girls stood there, silently.
"That's why I was late," Sasha said in a scared voice. "I just pulled up and parked my car out front. It's too dark to see anything. Then, as I'm walking up to the porch, someone runs down, and tries to tackle me." More tears streamed down Sasha's face. "I'm running away, when I hear a gunshot. I frantically knocked on your back door," she gestured toward Lucy. "There was no sign of them, then. It was like they just disappeared."
"Did you see who it was?" Ashley asked.
Sasha shook her head. "No, I didn't see a face. All I know is that the person was wearing a black hoodie and jeans."
"Wait, so was it a guy or a girl?" Troian asked, nervously finger combing her long brown hair.
"I don't know."
"You know what," Lucy said, standing up. "We should call the police. You could have been killed."
But Sasha shook her head, and raced toward Lucy. "No, please don't," she pleaded. "I'm begging you."
"Why not?" Lucy asked.
"No, really. Don't!" Sasha begged. She put her finger to her lips. "This person could hurt us. All of us. I think they sent me this." She pulled her phone out of the pocket of her jeans, and showed the girls a message. It read
Sasha, you've always been such a lucky girl, but not this time. Oh, and if you don't do exactly what I say, I won't only hurt you, but your friends too- A
