SLAP!

I flinch as I hold my face where my dad slapped me.

"That better be the last time you interrupt a conversation between me and your mother!" My dad yelled as I stood in front of my bed.

"Do you understand me?" He asked sternly.

"But I don't like when you hit, mama.." I said tears in my eyes.

I then got backhanded, loosing balance falling on top of my bed.

"Do you understand me?!" He yelled this time.

"Y-Yes dad.." I stuttered.

"Good." My dad said before walking  towards the door. "Get ready for bed." He then walked out.

I wiped my tears while sighing. I don't know why he tells me to go to bed, I have no reason to go to bed for.

I haven't been to school since I was ten years old because my dad wouldn't drive me, and he hardly allows my mom to leave the house.

I hate living like a prisoner in my own home, but there's nothing I can do about it.

I love my dad just as much as I love my mom, but I want him to change.

After I changed into my pyjamas, I walked to the washroom to brush my teeth.

I then paused hearing cries coming from my parents room. I could tell my dad wasn't here, he always goes to work late.

I walked to their room and my mom was kneeling near the edge of the bed, crying into the sheets.

I quickly ran over concerned.

"Mama, what's wrong?!" I asked her.

She looked at me slightly smiling, but soon returned to her crying.

"Everything, Ebony.. Your dad, how we're living, the abuse, everything." She said continuing to cry into the sheets.

"Things will get better, mama." I told her hugging her. "How do you figure?" She doubted.

"Because I pray every night that dad will change and things will get better. And I'm sure if I pray enough, God will get tired of me asking him and just help us already." I smiled.

My mom slightly chuckled though I wasn't exactly joking.

"I'm so happy after all you've been through, you still have a sense of humour." My mom said running her hand through my dreadlocks.

"I'm serious, mama."

She only smiled at me, tears continuing to come down her face.

"Whatever may happens, I want you to know I love you. I love you so much, Ebony. No matter what."

I smiled. "I love you too."

She then hugged me tight with me hugging her back just as tight.

"Hurry up, Reezy!" I yelled as he followed behind me.

"Damn girl, wait!" He yelled back.

We was walking the basketball court to shoot some hella hoops.

Even though I always beat his ass.

When we arrived I turned around to him holding the ball.

"Aight, one on one." I said bouncing the ball.
