In the pov of Mei

I looked down at the table where a young woman laid, not even twenty years. Her body was bruised and in her chest was a long shard of metal, lodged to her chest.

She had arrived in earlier today. She had been in a severe car accident where a truck had hit a passenger car. She must be a wealthy young lady for her family to own their own vehicle.

I looked at her peaceful face calmed with anesthesia and breathed deeply through my surgeons mask. I had my hands raised, ready to start the procedure as I had walked to the OR.

I looked into the eyes of the assistants for today's procedure. Then, They are all med students, young but I know them to be really capable. Everyone was new to this at some point. Without chances to show their skills they can never move forward in this carreer.

"Pleasure to be working with you. Starting operation 9:53 PM." I nodded to the interns.

I started by inspecting the area around the wound to inspect the length and width of the embedded object and if it hits any vitals.

I frown as I notice how the metal had pierced the superior vena cava and one of the arteries. The shard was embedded right above the heart but luckily it didn't hit it. That would be more difficult.

I had asked for pictures, but she needed an immediate operation which meant that I was working blind.

The metal stopped the blood flow but soon the woman would run out of oxygen in her blood. We don't have much time.

Her heart is still beating, so she still receives blood but weakly. Her heartbeat is slow. We probably have less than 15 minutes.

I had made my decision. It had taken me less than three minutes to measure the situation and to arrive at a conclusion.

"Set the timer for 10 minutes and give me my scalpel, clamp, and suturing equipment. We will move really fast from now. I will remove the metal shard and proceed to clamp and then suture the broken veins."

I saw couple nods and received my scalpel and did a fast and skillful cut to loosen the area around the metal and with a quick but careful movement removed the object. As I did it the blood started flowing and I felt the interns getting restless but I just held out my hand.

"gauze and clamp, please." The intern next to me gave them to me and I fastly clamped the vein and used the tissue to remove the loose blood.

After clamping both of the broken veins I headed out my hand for the suture equipment that was fastly handed to me.

Luckily the veins weren't severely broken and the suture was easy. I made a simple but tight suture for both veins and checked the wound for other injuries that I didn't find.

I, quickly, and neatly closed the wound and sighed as I looked at my finished work with pride.

I looked around and smiled at the interns.

"Procedure successfully finished at 11.10 PM. I believe you can transfer the patient to the ward on your own." I turned around and left the room without listening to the answer walking to the changing room and removed the bloody plastic gloves and threw them to the thrash. I also removed my mask and bloody gown.
