In the pov of Mei
I walked to miss Rurashi and helped her to a sitting position.
I then smiled at her.
"My name is Ichinose Mei, Rurashi-san. I'm your operating doctor, and I performed the surgery on you. Could you tell me how you are feeling?" She seemed a little baffled but gave me a slight smile.
"I'm feeling a little dizzy and tired but otherwise pretty good. My chest hurts a little, though." I smiled slightly.
"Well, it's to be expected. You were really heavily injured after all, but I'll add some more painkillers for you." I reached up for the tip and raised the number of painkillers slightly.
"I need to do some checks on you, so if you don't mind." She nodded, and I raised her blanket off her.
I went to her feet and took out a pen.
I ran the pen along her feet and looked at her as she pulled her feet slightly. Then, I smiled as I did the same to the other leg and got the same reaction.
"It seems like you aren't paralyzed. You felt that properly correct?" She nodded, and I smiled and reached to her eyes with a small flashlight and checked her eyes.
"All normal. How are you feeling now? Is the painkiller helping?" She nodded.
I turned away for a moment and sent a memo to the nurses to contact her father.
"Ichinose-san?" I looked at her as she said my name.
"What is it?" She looked a little nervous.
"Can I call you Mei? You can, of course, call me Yui? You don't seem that much older than me." I probably looked shocked for a while but then smiled at her.
"Of course, Yui. But why so suddenly?"
She smiled a little awkwardly and fidgeted slightly.
"I just respect you, I guess. You are so young but so smart. You are probably around my age but so much better achieved than me. The only achievement I have is being Rurashi, which isn't even something I gained for myself. The only thing I'm good at is being rich and wielding my power." I sighed, smiling at her.
"There's nothing admirable about me. I'm just someone struggling to survive in this world, and I believe it's a good skill to speak and be able to wield the cards you have in your hands properly. I looked you up after I operated on you. I saw you on tv. You work hard saying the people's words to the yakuza and protecting the innocents. You are someone I look up to."
She stared at me, and a tear fell down her face.
"Hey, are you alright? I didn't mean to make you sad." She shook her head.
"I'm happy. You are the first to tell me my work has a good meaning. That I'm doing something good in this world. You are the first one to tell me you respected me. My father loves me, and I love him, but he doesn't support me like that. He just wishes for me to marry into a good family and have a good life, but I want more than that. I want to be someone who will be remembered as someone good, as someone who worked for the good of the people."
I smiled at her.
"You are one already, so don't tell me you don't have achievements." I laughed slightly, and she just stared at me.
I looked at her as she suddenly went quiet.
"What? Did you see a ghost?" She shook her head.
"I just properly realized how pretty you are." I felt my face going red, and she got flustered.
"I'm sorry! Was that weird? I was just thinking how any guy that sees that smile must be smitten, and it slipped. I'm sorry." I burst out laughing.
Her face was just simply too funny.
"It's good, really. I don't mind." Again, I said that through my laughter, and this time she was the one who went red.
"Just don't move around too much. We don't want your wound ripping." She nodded to me, and at that moment, the doors burst open, and her father stepped in.
"Yui! Are you alright, my dear?" He was clearly distraught, but she just smiled with a calming smile.
"I'm alright otou-san. You don't need to worry. Mei's been keeping me company." She looked at me with a smirk, and I sighed a little but returned the smile.
"I can't thank you enough, Ichinose-sensei. How can I ever repay you?" I just shook my head.
"There's no need. I was just doing my job. I will leave you now so that you can talk in private." I bowed slightly, and just as I was leaving the room, Yui gave me one last smile.
