After the incident where Moody turned him into a ferret Draco stayed off the spotlight for a while. I can't say I blame him, Blaise kept teasing him about it. I decided to be wary of Moody because I felt that there was something about him that wasn't right. And for some reason there was something familiar to me about him. However it seemed I wasn't the only one staying out of Moody's way, Snape was also avoiding to show the deep loathing that I knew he harboured for the man, so as a result he made the rest of us suffer.
However I will not deny that I was super excited for my first DADA lesson with Moody and it felt like a betrayal to uncle Remus. I sat next to Hermione as we waited for him to arrive.
His footsteps clunked as he came in."You can put away those books, you won't be needing them."
Excitedly we put the books away. He stepped up to the front and called out the register. His eye lingered a little more than necessary on me. Creepy. "I had a letter from Professor Lupin about this class. It seems you had a thorough training on dark creatures. You covered Kappas, Red Caps, Hinkypunks, Boggarts, Grindylows and Werewolves. But you are behind, very behind on Curses. I'm here to teach you what wizards can do to each other. I've got one year to teach you-" said Moody
"What aren't you staying?" blurted out Ron. Moody turned to him and smiled. It didn't look well on him.
"You'll be Arthur Weasleys son eh? Got me out of a tight spot a few days ago. No I'm not staying. Special favour to Dumbledore then I'm back to my quiet retirement." he said.
Something about the way he said it made me suspicious.
"Straight to it then. Curses. They come in many forms and shapes. Now I'm only supposed to teach you counter curses and not supposed to show you what the curses look like until sixth year. The Ministry doesn't think you can handle it. But Dumbledore's got a higher opinion of your nerves and I say the sooner the better. How can you defend yourself against something you've never seen? A wizard who's going to put an illegal dark curse on you wont be nice about it. You need to be alert. You need to be watchful. You need to put that away Miss Brown when I'm talking." Lavender blushed she had been showing Parvati her completed horoscope under the desk.
"Anyone know any dark illegal curses?" asked Moody.
Our hands shot into the air.
"There's one my dad told me about. The Imperius curse." said Ron.
"Your father would know about that one. Gave the Ministry lots of trouble once." He produced three spiders from his drawer, took one and muttered, "Imperio." He made the spider do a back flip, a cartwheel and a tap dance. Everyone was laughing but I wasn't. What if that was me?
"You think its funny? You'd like it if I did that to you? Total control. Many witches and wizards were under the Imperious Curse. Some job for the ministry trying to determine who was doing their own free will and who was forced to act. The Imperious Curse can be fought but it takes real strength of character and not everyone has that. Better avoid being hit with it. Any other curses?"
"The Cruciatus Curse." said Neville.
"Your name is Longbottom?" Inquired Moody. Neville nodded.
"It will have to be bigger for you to see this. Engorgio!" The spider swelled to a tarantula. "Crucio!" It writhed and jerked in pain. It made no sound but I knew if it could it would scream. Something stirred in my memory. I felt as if I would have a vision. Not now please I thought.
"Stop it!" said Hermione who was looking at Neville. He was looking really pale and horrified.
"Any other curses?" asked Moody.
"Avada Kedavra." I whispered.
"Rhine's daughter?" he asked. It was weird. I was used to being Sirius Black's daughter but I nodded. He took out the last spider. It attempted to run but he blocked it. I wanted to look away but I couldn't. "Avada Kedavra!" My memory stirred again. I couldn't fight it any more. "Look." said a familiar female voice. I was her and she was me. We were one.
I was walking into a dark room. Bellatrix Lenstrange appeared out of nowhere.
"Where is he? I need to see him." I asked.
"He doesn't want to see you." said Bellatrix with a twisted smile.
"You are lying." I said.
"No. I'm the Assassin actually. You aren't important enough for him to deal with himself." she said cackling.
"No." I said.
"Yes. And you have no idea how much I will enjoy this Rhine. Crucio." she shrieked. I had experienced pain before but nothing like this. I screamed. "Stop!"
"I want you to beg me to kill you Rhine. Crucio! Crucio! Crucio!" Bellatrix screamed. I jerked, I screamed, I writhed in pain but she didn't stop. I would rather die than feel this pain.
"Kill me." I screamed and she stopped. "Just do it, please."
"I will. My cousin is coming here. I want him to see it." said Bellatrix and sure enough Sirius barged in.
"Avada Kedavra!" she shrieked, the same moment he screamed.
"Rhine!"
And then darkness.
