Viki woke up as sun shined through her window illuminating the room. She closed the lavender curtains and they made a soft purple glow bounce onto the dark blue walls. She changed from yesterday's clothes to a fresh pair. This time, her top was the velvet and her bottoms were dark blue. She slipped on some black socks and rebraided her hair after brushing it. It was a bit cold so Viki decided to wear her cloak for a bit. She opened the door and checked her mailbox. The red flag was up. Remembering what Olina said, she opened the lid of the box. Inside was a pink and yellow card with a black spider hanging from a white web. She took it out and smiled.
Viki opened the card and read what was inside it: "Welcome to our humble abode. Since you decided to sleep in, we made a little game to show you our home. Part two will be tomorrow, but for day, enjoy the game! You may collect other players as helpers along the way, but you are limited to two at a time. Each room has a new challenge that will earn you a ticket if completed. You will need that ticket for your next destination (this one is the first ticket for you!) Here is your first riddle: 'When one is hungry, they go to eat. Where shall we find the room for this feat?' Good luck and have fun! ~ Orphanage Orphans and Workers"
Viki shook her head. Sister Tera said they didn't many traveling visitors, so it's understandable that they prepared a game for when they did. Let's just hope she didn't have to answer too personal questions and that the orphans had finished their schoolwork. Viki yawned; she was still waking up a bit. The idea of going and eating was also a good one. The riddle probably meant dinning room or the kitchen. The kitchen might be preparing food, maybe for dinner or lunch.
Viki went down the stairs clutching her cloak. Good thing she decided to put on some warm socks; the floor seemed a bit cold. At the dining room table sat Brother Ronin, viewing some math worksheets. Since he was a teacher, it didn't surprise Viki. On the table was some pancakes, toast, roseberries, and apple juice. Viki greeted Brother Ronin. He put down his cup of tea.
"Ah, Good morning, Viki." He said. He put down the sheet that he was grading and Viki could read the name at the top even though it was upside down. It was Xar's paper; he must have turned his schoolwork in. "Have you checked your mailbox?"
"Yep." Viki said, pulling out the card. "What's the first challenge?"
"Eat breakfast." Brother Ronin replied, taking a bite of some of his toast. "We can't have you missing a meal, so it's included."
"I'll be helping prepare a meal in the kitchen, then?" Viki said. Brother Ronin laughed.
"One of things not listed on the card: no future questions. And I don't know what Olina, Soona, and Xar has planned so I can't help you anyway. They are the main ones that planned this."
"Oh, okay." Viki ate a breakfast of three pancakes, a handful of roseberries, and a cup of apple juice. She took the ticket - which really just was a piece of paper with a riddle on it - and read the riddle: "From math to reading, from spelling to science, this is the place where we get intelligence."
Viki turned to Brother Ronin and asked him where the classroom was. He told her on the fourth floor. Viki said thank you and went up the stairs. She saw Mayna in front of one of the doors. With the ticket in her hand, Viki went to her.
"Good morning, Mayna." Viki said, showing her the ticket.
"Did you enjoy the breakfast?" Mayna took the ticket and put it in her pocket, then opened the door.
"Yes, thank you." Viki said as they went in. On the greenish blackboard, there was an upside down equation. On a table, there was a sheet of paper and a pencil. "So, what do I have to do?"
"Write down the equation, solve it, and then I'll tell you the rest." Mayna said. Viki nodded and began writing it down. Four times six equals ten A minus two. That would have 'A' equal two point 6. Viki told Mayna and she gave her the rest of the instructions. "Okay, times that by six then divide by two minus point 8."
