- Al -
.
.
I look at Marcus Eaton, the man who abused my father and never owned up to it. I stare blankly at my grandfather, and he stares at me.
"Tobias kept my last name? He didn't change it?" He asks, tears filling his eyes.
I look at him and nod. I am not used to people calling my dad Tobias, because I grew up thinking his name was Four, but I realize that Marcus only knew him as Tobias, not Four.
"Al?" he asks, "Who are you named after."
"One of my mom's friends who died." I say.
"Who is your mother?" he asks.
"Tris, Beatrice Prior," I say, and his eyes widen, just like Edward's did when I told him who my father was.
"What?" He asks.
I nod my head, then ask, "Why? Why'd you do it?" He looks at me, not knowing what what I am talking about. "Why'd you hit my dad?"
He looks at me, then turns back to the computer. "I will give you a serum that will put you into a test, where you will have to answer a series of questions to test your aptitude for each faction," He says.
"You didn't answer my question," I say, raising my voice, as tears stream down my face.
"Al," he says.
"You didn't answer me!" I yell, "Why?"
He looks at me, "Please have a seat," he says.
I dont listen to him, "Why'd you do it? He hates you now because of it. I don't know what makes me even more sick, you or the fact that you didn't know that my brothers, sister and I exisited!" I am screaming now, someone is going to come in soon.
As I predicted, a man from abnegation and Patrick, Tommy's older brother, come in. Patrick grabs my arms, "C'mon Al," Patrick says.
"No!" I yell. "WHY?!" I scream. "WHY?!" I yell at Marcus. He just stares at me.
Patrick pulls me out of the room and pulls me into a hug. I start sobbing into his chest. "Al, shhh, it's okay. They shouldn't have had you take the test with your grandfather." He says, "Al, you have to go take the test now. I will have Tori give it to you."
"But, I thought that someone from my faction couldn't give me the test," I say.
"I can pull some strings. Don't worry," he says.
"Thanks Patrick," I say, and wipe off my cheeks.
"Second door on your left," he smiles, and I walk down the hall and enter the door Patrick told me to.
Tori stands there, typing on her computer, facing away from me. "Please have a seat, I'm Tori, I will be administoring the test. What's your-" she says, and turns around. "Al?" she says as she sees me. "What are you doing here?"
I explain to her what happened and she pulls me into a hug.
"Okay Al, you ready?" she hands me a little cup with a purple liquid in it.
"Drink up." she says, and I down the liquid.
I feel drowsy, and close my eyes. When I open my eyes, I am alone in the room. I walk over to the mirror, and brush my hair with my fingers, then try to wipe some of the runny mascara from my cheeks. I look at the mirror and see a girl in all black walking over to me. I turn around, and the walls are now all mirrors. I look at the girl, and it takes me a moment to realize she is me. I look back at the mirror, and there are millions of reflections of me. They all make the same moves I do, except for the one reflection that I saw in the beginning. She is now turned around, so I tap her shoulder.
"Choose," she says.
As soon as she says that, there is a table with a knife and a slab of meat on it. I quickly grab them both, and turn back to the girl.
"One," she says, but I shake my head. I refuse to put either one down. "You should have listened," she says, then she, and the rest of the reflections, disappear.
I'm still surrounded by mirrors, but my reflection doesn't show in any of them. I look down, and the knife and meat are both gone. Then, I hear a growling, and a frightening black dog runs at me, but I don't run away. I attempt to kick it, but my foot goes right through it.
"This isn't real," I say. I fall to my knees and close my eyes. When I open them, the dog is gone, replaced by a cute puppy.
I pet it, and hear a girl say, "Puppy!" Then the puppy changes back into the mean dog. It runs after the girl, then I realize the girl is Nat. I chase after the dog, and tackle it to the ground, but I don't hit the ground, I seem to fall through it.
When my feet hit solid ground, I realize that I'm in a bus. I sit next to an abnegation man.
"Have you seen this man?" he asks, and holds up a newspaper. The picture of the man is Amar.
"Why?" I ask.
"If they find him, I will be saved," he says.
"Saved from what?" I ask, thinking to myself, this isn't real.
"It doesn't matter, have you seen him?" he asks.
"Yes," I say.
The man's expression brightens, "Where?" he asks.
"I can't tell you that," I say.
"Why not?" he asks.
"That's my brother," I say, "and I would never betray him."
The man looks at me, and the bus jolts to a stop. I fling forward, and then I sit up straight and I am in the testing room.
Tori looks at me, in a frightened way. "Al, come with me."
I do as she says, and stand up. We walk out the back door, and stand in the alley.
"What were my results?" I ask.
"You are," she says, but pauses. "You are dauntless," she says, and a weight is lifted off my shoulders. "and abnegation," she says, and my stomach drops, but she's not done, "and erudite, and candor and amity."
"What?" I say.
"Your results were inconclusive." she says.
I start to breath heavily, "That's impossible," I say.
"No it's not, Al, it's just exceptionally rare," Tori says.
"Oh my god, I'm Divergent," I say, staring at her.
"Not exactly, you are like a super Divergent. They call it Resurgent."
