"F- Flippy?" She whimpered.

"Hm?" Flippy replied.

"Shouldn't you be asleep?" She asked concerned.

"I should ask you the same thing," Flippy peeked from under the blanket, giving her a sly smirk. She was relieved at the sight, seeing he was acting like his usual self.
"You should be asleep. You're gonna need rest if you're gonna recover," Flippy stated more seriously, stretching his arms.

"You need sleep too," Flaky sighed, sitting next to him. Flippy smiled kindly at her, enveloping her in the blankets with him, along with trapping her in a hug. She giggled, nuzzling into his chest. Some of his of his velvety fur was peeking from over his tank top, making for an effective pillow. Smiling, she felt herself dozing off. That was, until she realised Flippy's plan.
"No!" She pouted, sitting up, and smacking his chest childishly.

"I knew you'd be too smart for that," he shrugged, holding her close again.

"Why do you want me to sleep do badly?" She asked, biting her lip.

"Why are you so against sleeping?" Flippy joked, Flaky giving him a stern, annoyed glare. Flippy sighed, his ears dropping.
"I- I just want you to recover. I- I'm scared y- you won't m- make it otherwise," Flippy whimpered, his positive attitude evaporating, washed away by his tears.

"Flippy, what makes you think I won't make it? Yeah, it hurts, and it will take a while to recover, but I'm not gonna die," Flaky reassured, wiping his tears with her hand. He placed his paw on her affectionately, his puffy eyes meeting her pink ones.
"Y- you're not a- a... you know... I d- don't know how much you can take..." he sobbed, hugging her, and leaning into her shoulder.

"Flippy, it's ok. We'll be fine. I'll be fine. None of us blame you. We love you. We understand you really didn't mean what you did. You're still my best friend. Don't ever forget that," Flaky cooed, stroking his neck gently, his green fur feeling like silk. Flippy nodded in understanding, squeezing her tighter.

Once Flippy had calmed down, he pulled away.
"So, why won't you sleep?" He asked, Flaky jumping in response. She wasn't sure what to say. She looked away, biting her lip. She didn't want to hurt his feelings by answering, but he hadn't fell for a lie yet. Plus, wouldn't he be more hurt if she lied? But, of she tried lying, and he caught her out, wouldn't he be happier that she tried to keep him from being hurt? She didn't know what to do.
"You're scared of me, aren't you?" He asked, startling the porcupine.

"W- wha-? O- of course not! W- why w- would i- i-" she stammered, Flippy clearly not buying it. Her eyes teared up, Flippy wiping them, giving her a comforting smile.
"I'm sorry," she whimpered, sensing Flippy's pain at her fear.

"I feel the same, y'know?" He chuckled, Flaky looking at him, puzzled, "I'm scared too. T- that's why I'm not planning on sleeping tonight."

"W- why would that help?"

"I- I dunno... m- maybe if i- I stay awake, I'll be more alert if anything were to happen..."

Flaky's ears drooped, not liking the idea. She yawned, leaning against Flippy again. It wasn't long until she slipped into sleep. The veteran sighed with relief, brushing some of the stray quills from her gorgeous face. She looked so peaceful. Her pinkish lips hung open slightly. They looked so soft. Flippy leaned closer, his own eyelids closing.

Blinking, Flippy softly jolted back, careful not to wake the sleeping beauty. Must have been falling asleep. Shaking his head, he checked his phone. 1:23 in the morning. Just need to keep myself up.

Golden eyes trailed back to the smaller mammal. She breathed slowly, every warm breath felt by his chest fur. He snickered quietly, the warmth tickling him.

As cautiously as possible, he picked her up, carrying her to his bed. Gently, he placed her down, draping the blanket over her, before sitting on the edge. As much as he hated it, he often found his eyes trailing over to her. He wondered what it'd be like to fall asleep next to his best friend. M- maybe a couple of minutes wouldn't hurt? Once again, he found himself leaning close, on the verge of sleep. He shook himself awake, slapping himself across the face. No! S- stay awake. W- what if he... his thoughts off as he drifted, the quiet, steady breathing of his friend lulling him to sleep. The last thing he saw was Flaky's pretty face.
