Cecilia's POV

The one truly good thing in my life, aside from my brother, was my boyfriend, Pete. He was always there to catch me from falling. I didn't know how I could go through high school without him.

"Cece," he said, a week before school started, "you seem so distant lately." I just nodded. Why would he say that? I've always been distant.

"I don't know," I murmured, silently begging for him to drop it. But, he didn't.

"Tell me what's wrong," he said, getting closer to me. I just backed up a little.

"Nothing," I said, "I haven't changed." He rolled his eyes and scoffed.

"Cecilia Elizabeth Joseph, you and I know that's a pitiful lie." I just looked up at him, not moving. "Tell me what is up," he insisted. I shook my head.

"No. I won't because there's nothing wrong with me. Do you have to automatically assume that something's wrong with me every single damn time I try and to just be left alone?" My voice got louder and louder as I kept talking. Pete was getting impatient with me.

"Yes, I do," he said, anger in his eyes evident, "because there's obviously something wrong with you!" I pushed him back.

"Just leave me alone!" I yelled, pointing to the door. He stormed out, shooting me a glance as he left.

Look at what you did, I thought, you just pushed out the one person that cares about you.

-

Pete didn't talk to me any that following week. I couldn't blame him. I said I wanted to be left alone.

So, it was just me and Tyler, yet again.

On the first day of school, we walked together. At school, we sat down under our tree together. It wasn't any different.

Until I saw Pete. And he saw me. And he ignored me.

"Wasn't that...?" Tyler trailed off. I nodded. "Then why didn't he say hi or anything?"

"We got into a fight a week ago. I told him to leave me alone. This time he's taking it seriously." He shook his head.

"I'm sorry, Cec." I shrugged.

"All good things must come to an end," I said, "and it looks like I'm the reason it ended." Tyler wrapped his skinny arms around me and hugged me.

But I still knew that this thing between me and Pete, it was all my fault.
