EDITED
Morgan's POV
I still don't know what to make of Luke and Jack's conversation. I feel like I am on a totally different planet right now, helplessly confused.
I should confront Luke. Or should I confront Jack? I'll work with Jack to see what I can get out of him first.
So as soon as the final bell rings, I ignore everybody and head to where I know Jack will be.
"Of course you're here," I say, finding him behind the dumpster at the back of the school. Smoking.
"What is it you want Morgan?" He asks me, an unreadable expression on his face.
"I wanted to ask you about something."
"What do you want to know?"
"What's with you and Luke earlier?" I question. "I overheard the conversation the two of you shared."
"I don't know what you're talking about," he says, taking a long drag of his cigarette.
"You know exactly what I am talking about. What is going on? What did you guys do?"
"If you want answers, ask your lover boy," he responds, throwing the end on the ground and stepping on it. He turns to leave but I go up and pull him back.
"Lover boy? What is this Jack? Why can't you just tell me what I want to know?"
"It's not my place."
"Not your place?" I exclaim. "You are involved."
"Go to Tommy or Luke with your questions because you aren't getting any answers from me."
He leaves and this time I let him, because I know he's right. I won't get any answers from him. But I wonder what Tommy has to do with the situation at all.
I text him, asking where he's at.
From Tommy: I'm parked beside your car. Are you still coming over to mine
On my way, I send him.
I walk around the school to my car and there he is, leaning against the passenger's door. Looking at him makes me want to smile, but I fight it away.
"Hey," he greets me as I unlock the doors and get in. I don't say anything yet, trying to process in my head how this is going to go.
I put the key in the ignition but don't start it. Looking, I notice barely any other cars except mine and Tommy's in the parking lot. People really have places to go, I guess.
"Are we going or what, babe?" Tommy asks me. I tense up. I have no idea what this situation is about and I need answers.
"Luke owes Jack money for some reason," I say, ignoring what he asked me. "I asked Jack why and he said in order for me to get answers I need to talk to you or Luke. So here I am talking to you, Tommy. What's going on?"
He fidgets with his hands and I know that he is nervous. But why does he have to be nervous about?
"Huh, Tommy?"
He freezes and stutters: "M-money? W-what are y-you talking-"
"Oh, stop it, because Jack already tried playing dumb. What is going on?"
He huffs and sighs and I start to become anxious. What if something bad is really going on?
Finally, Tommy says, "Jack got something that's was intended for me to give to you. He was giving it to Luke today at school so Luke could give it to me before you came out. I was supposed to give Luke the money to give back to Jack."
"What's the deal with the secrecy though Tommy? All this swapping back and forth? And what is it you are giving to me?"
"I want to wait a few more days before-"
"No, Tommy, I can't wait a few more says. Because this whole situation is not sounding good, I want to leave you right here," I truthfully say. I have no time for games and if that is all Tommy is going to play, then I guess I can't be with him anymore.
He looks out the window for a moment before erring out of my car, shutting the door, and coming around to my side. I face him as e opens my door. Then I watch as he gets on one knee before me. And I'm thinking this can't possibly be what I'm thinking it is.
"This is a bad place to do this, but I guess I have no choice right now," Tommy starts and awkwardly chuckles. "It doesn't matter though. Look, Morgan I don't have these words planned out so it is honestly coming from my heart.
"I know it hasn't been long at all since we have been seeing each other, but as soon as I met you, I felt the connection and I knew it was you. It was you I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Although you're not 19 yet and I'm only 21, I know the moment is perfect because we are together. I love you Morgan, with all my life, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.
"Will you marry me Morgan?" He takes the black velvet box out of his jacket pocket and I see the most beautiful ring I have ever seen.
I become speechless. I can not believe Tommy just proposed to me. I start thinking about everything and about what answer I should give him.
I sigh and say, "Tommy, I love you too, but you are right saying we are both young." I pause and watch as his face falters, but it perks back up a little when I say, "But I am not saying no. I just...do you think I could have some time to think about it?"
"Of course you can baby," he says, leaning on to kiss my cheek. He gets up and walks back to his car, leaving a little weight on my left thigh: the box with the engagement ring.
(The ring looks like the attached photo)
