As I'd finished writing the letter to her devasted parents, there was a set of muffled voices on the opposite side of the door. "Why is there a lock on this door?" I heard a woman voice say. I thought it may have been the police, responding to Cassies' fathers call, and already beginning to investigate her death.
"She's always had a lock on the door." Her mother sobbed. "We've sometimes tried to get in, but we can't get in without her noticing a difference when she returns." There was a shoving on the door. "Mind if I...?" "Go ahead." her mother sobbed again.
That's not cool. Milo! Time to go! I yelled in my head.
As quietly as I could, I jumped out the window, with Milo following on my heels. We made our way around the side off the overhang, and I leaped over to the fence. I steadied myself, and turned around to face my companion, who was waiting on the overhang. "Jump." and she did.
I caught her against my chest, and with the momentum from her jump, I went with the flow and jumped backwards into the neighbours front yard. I crouched down behind the hedge that seperated the yards, and heard Cassies' door slam open.
"Hey," I heard the police woman say. "What's this?" I could hardly hear what they said, I wasn't all that close to the window.
I waited a minute, as her outraged father's booming voice broke the morning silence. "She's been here! Blackblooded murderer!" he screamed out the window. "You cannot hide from what you've done to her! You'll regret it, you-" "Search the area! Raid the houses! Set up a perimetre!" the policewoman yelled over his cursing words.
I whispered to Milo. "Run." and released her from my hold against my chest. We made our way across the front yards, whilst trying to keep as hidden as possible.
But hiding from something that's behind you, whilst trying to keep an eye on where you're running isn't as easy as it looks.
"Hey! You!" I heard a mans voice yell from behind me. Crap! I continued to run, not bothering to hide anymore, because a cop had already seen me. My puppy ran along beside me, striding happily as we evaded the police. "Oi! Get back 'ere!" he yelled again!
How 'bout no. Is that okay with you? Mr. Cop? No? Well come get me, bitch!
I ran faster than I ever had before, and Milo managed to keep up. I'll admit, for a pup, she was pretty damn fast. I could hear the policeman chasing after us. He must of had a friend, unless he could impersonate a woman. "Stop there!" a womans voice yelled.
I skidded around the corner and continued on. Nothing would stop me, and Milo ran along with me. As we continued through the chase, I thought to myself; What was to happen if I was caught? Arrested? Interrogated?
Would I be seen as guilty, or innocent?
Would they believe me, if I told them I hadn't murdered my best friend?
Would they believe me, if I said I'd fought against the real killer?
Would they believe me, if I told them about the spilt blood, the fight, the friendship, the sisterly bond that the two of us had together?
Escaping the thoughts, I decided I'd push them aside until a better time. Crying while being chased by the law probably wasn't the best idea.
"C'mon Milo." I encouraged, as we headed into the local heavily forested park. It may give us a chance to hide. I thought to myself.
As we ran, I remembered being here many times before. The memories fell over me like the darkest of clouds, and I felt my eyes become teary. Not now, damn it!
I saw ghostly many familiar figures as I dodged between the trees and hid across the park. I couldn't hear the police pursuing anymore, but I could hear silent footsteps. It wasn't the heavy boots that the police wore though. These sounded like childrens feet.
As I heard a cheerful laugh, I spun around, haunted. I could see two characters. Both girls, both young. One looked like Cassie, the other looked like me!
They laughed like the innocent children they were back then. I ran from those children, and went to sit down on a small grassy hill to catch my breath.
In my head, I could see Cassie telling me how far, and how fast I'd ran. But I didn't see her pretty healthy face. Instead, I saw her beautiful face, covered in blood and dirt. She was sickly pale, and had massive bags under her eyes.
The memories of her voice spun around my head. "Kass, that was brillian-" "They'll never catch-" "You're so fast!" "Is that a rec-" he voices spoke all at once.
"Shut UP!" I screamed, holding my head between my hands. I didn't want to see her like that, but now, I pictured only her dead corpse lying lifelessly in the grave. The grave her best friend had buried her in.
I looked up when I saw a shadow cast over where I sat. I looked up to the male cop, with his arms down straight, and his gun in both hands. He looked away from where I was, and quickly turned around to spot me.
Within a half a second of seeing me, he brought his gun up level to his face, and yelled "Freeze!"
I looked down the barrel of the gun, and a funny thought came across me.
What if Cassie had to look down the barrel of a gun, and be fearful of when he would pull the trigger? Although I wished she hadn't been attacked all together, would it have been a quicker death, rather than being left to drain out?
The cops' female partner came around. She threw her gun up too, and instructed.. me what to do. "Hands where we can see 'em!" I was already pretty damn annoyed, and couldn't give a damn anymore. I didn't move my hands from where they already were.
Behind my furious expression and my tightly clenched teeth, I bluntly told them, "Shoot me." "Hands where we can see 'em!" he repeated what his partner had said.
I slowly began to stand myself up. The police stiffened a bit, and aimed their guns. "I don't think you heard me..." I said, my eyes looking up as my head tilted to the ground. "Do it, damn it!" I yelled.
There was no sound.
I began to slowly walk toward them, hoping I would intimidate them into shooting me. Milo followed behind my leg, and she would growl on the occasion.
I got about a metre away from the police before they began to back away. "Stop!" they both instructed. "Nah." I resisted. "Do we shoot her?" the woman asked her partner, without taking an eye of me.
There was a loud flash, and something hit my gut. I grasped at the source of the pain, and fell to my knees. I fought the sleepy erge, but I was fighting a losing battle.
I thought to myself as my eyes became heavier; It's alright Kassidy. You'll see her again within moments...
