For the next while or so, we sat on the side of the road, waiting for a ride. At this rate, we thought we'd be lucky to get a lift by nightfall. We couldn't hear any grumbling engines as the day wore on, and we saw countless critters scurry around the abandoned mans' road.
Kayden sat behind me, hugging me around the shoulders as I sat infront of him with my legs crossed. He had one leg crossed, but his right came next to me, bent up. I was uncomfortably comfortable with this boy. I normally wouldn't pay any attention to this kind of behaviour.
No, don't think like that. This guy's just a friend. We're both just giving eachother a supportive hug, that's all. I told myself.
He was quiet for quite a while too. His head laid on the back of my neck, and he was clearly quite deep in thought. I could hear his heart pound gently against me, and could feel every breath he took. I closed my eyes, and held my hands over the top off eachother of where his met.
Milo laid on my lap, snoozing away happily without an obvious care in the world. She'd get excited every one in a while when a creature would scurry around, and give chase for a moment, but truely loyal, she'd return to lay down when she had her fun.
I'd lost track of how long we'd sat here together, but it had gotten dark. I felt Kayden pull himself away, and I was partially disappointed. The other part of me was glad, my arse was stiff and sore.
"C'mon. It's apparent no-one's coming. We can cover more ground without risk of being re-captured by night. Ready?"
I gave a firm nod, and gave Milo a scratch. She hopped up off my lap, and streched out and yawned. I headed over to where Kayden was already walking, and Milo trotted along.
Although it was dark, the moon showed the way. I kept my shoes on the road at all times, and eventually had to continually call out to Milo. Although she did a fantastic job at staying at my heel, even without the lead on, like all pups she would get curious, and wander off into the forest alongside the road.
"Milo." I called. When I couldn't hear the pups paws pat along the road side after a moment of my call, I stopped. "Milo?" Where is she?
"Milo?!" I called calmly.
I heard a scruffling of near by bushes. Hoping it was Milo, I headed over to where I could hear the noises. As I felt my foot land on something that wasn't the road, I stopped. "Milo..." I called.
"Kassidy. Milo's over here..." Kayden told me through the darkness. As if to support his statement, she barked. "But..." I was nervous. I now had no idea where I was, nor did I know what stalked a few steps before me.
The foilage rustled, and something moved across quickly. "Kassidy..."
The bushes growled, and a pair of yellow eyes reflected from the moons shine. The outer side of the eyes got skinnier, and I deep growl brushed through the forest. "Kass!"
I felt the wind brush past me, and I felt the warmth of a rustic fur on my shoulder. I spun around ever quickly, and standing between me and my companions, was a brownish red wolf. His head hung low to the concrete, and his back arched with ragged hair standing up. His legs where skinny, but his body was muscular.
His fangs shined brighter than the stars, and his eyes burned brighter than the sun. His muzzle ripped back in waves, and his growl was deep and intimidating.
Yap Yap!
Now really ain't the time Milo!
The wolf threw his head around to look at where Kayden stood with Milo in his arms. Yap!
