We'd walked 'till we could walk no further, and sat down for a rest. For being cooped up in that place for 3 months, Kayden was pretty athletic. I believed he'd be loving it out here, because I sure knew I was. I was taking in each moment as if it was my last.
I was wanted for a crime I didn't commit, and that made me curious to why this guy was there. So I asked him.
"Kayden?" I asked as he mucked around with Milo. "Yeah?" he replied. "How'd you end up there? In the..." I trailed off, thinking of what may have happened if I hadn't taken a bold risk to escape.
"I could ask you the same thing." He laughed. It made me go quiet, and I shut up. I held my left arm with my right and looked down. I wished I hadn't said anything.
"Hey, it's cool." he gently replied, coming over to me. "I didn't mean anything by it." he supported. "I'm sorry." I told him. "It wasn't my place to have asked..." "No, it's alright." he smiled. He gave me a warm hug, and in this cold, damp forest, it was actually rather comforting, considering he was almost a stranger to me.
"I shouldn't have been in there in the first place." he stated, gently pulling out of the hug. "They're only interested in the promotions, those cops." He waited a moment before continuing on.
"One member of my family had issues. Serious issues. He was unhappy, and he was hurting... deeply. He hurt himself, calling it his own way of punishment. I still don't understand it. He wanted to 'punish himself', as he'd tell me. But he wasn't satisfied.
"He hated almost everyoneone. I was one out of a select few that could get near him. Even then, I couldn't sit next to him without snarling. You can feel the negetivity surronding him. Some have said it haunts him. Some say his gaze is empty..." Kayden was looking down, clearly saddened. He looked up, and walked over to me.
Once he stood infront of me, he looked down over me and brushed his soft hands over my check. I closed my eyes and just relaxed. It happened pretty naturally. I nudged against his hand, and I could feel he was comfortable too.
I opened my eyes after a moment to see him looking deeply. He has the most amazing green eyes. They're so deep, so alive, so captivating. His striaght lips curved into a half smile, as he gave a short sigh.
"Like you," he began, "The life is gone from his eyes. You cannot feel a soul behind his clouded eyes. There's no light. No spirit. No consciousness within his body." He then wrapped his hands around my neck and hugged me.
"Where'd the light in your eyes go?" he asked me. I just began to softly cry. "Hey." he said. I looked up at him, with a tear halfway down my cheek. He wiped it away with his sleeve. "It's alright." he soothed.
"It's not always a bad thing," he said. "It just means you're struggling. If there's no light in your eyes, it tells me you've lost something. The light's just trying to find it again." he smiled.
I had barely energy left to smile, even briefly. "Thanks Kayden. You're accent's really nice too, by the way." I admitted, admiring his mysterious accent.
"You like spanish accents, huh?" he asked. I nodded with a grin. He gave me an amazing white smile.
Milo ran over to my leg, and was leaning up on my shoe, jumping with her front legs, as if she knew how to get my attention. "What's up Milo?" I asked. She looked up at me and stopped jumping. She ran into the forest, and turned around. ARP! ARP!
What does she want?
I kneeled down to her level, and she ran back. I held out my hand, offering a pat. But she came over and bit on my camo pants, and tugged me in the direction she was trying to run. "Milo?" I asked.
She quickly let go off my pantleg and spun around. ARP! ARP! Her ears pricked, and I only just noticed the insecurities of being in this gloomy forest. "Time to go." Kayden whispered.
We turned around and ran quickly through the dark. The moon shined and the trees swayed, and I felt like I was in some sort of movie. There were gunshots coming from behind us, and there was someone yelling his name, almost ghostly. "Kayden... Kayden... Kayden..."
"I told this bitch to leave me alone, dammit!" he yelled. We kept running, leaping over mossy rocks and fallen trees. "Who?" I asked. "My damn cousin!" he yelled.
I still held the gun that I'd stolen from the guard back at the institute... hospital... prison? What do I call that place? I thought. Doesn't matter...
I took a few strides backwards and fired to where I could hear someone coming after us. I heard something hit the ground with a groan, so I turned to the front and continued on. Kayden had stopped running, and I ran past him before I'd noticed. I stopped a few metres infront from him.
"Why'd you stop?" I asked, looking back at him. He was looking to his left, and when I noticed two shadows being cast down to my right, so did I.
"Fu-" I yelled as I bounded back to Kayden, my cursing being interupted by the truck's loud horn. "Dayum..." Kayden quickly helped me to my feet. We chased down the road after the truck, which was a lumber truck, it had large dark logs stacked in a triangle of 6 along the back.
We ran, and we gained on the trucks rear. Kayden made a leap for the back of the truck, and grabbed one of the straps holding the logs in place, and held his foot on the small rail bumper. He held out his hand. "C'mon Kassy!" he yelled.
I was so close to grabbing his hand, but something shot me. I crimbled in pain, and fell to my knees, trying to hold my ribs together, wrapping both hands around my gut. "Kass!" Kayden yelled.
I couldn't breathe. I didn't know what to do anymore. I looked down to my stomach to look at what's been done, and the first thing I'd noticed was a large cut across my arm. It was trickling blood, and it didn't make me sick, or dizzy, or nauseated.
Kassidy... something called to me. Kassidy. Where are you? Help me Kassidy. Kassidy! the voice screamed in sheer terror.
I screamed, and held my hands to my ears tighter than I ever had before. "Kassidy!" I heard a firmiliar voice call. "Kayden? Kayden... h... help..."
