"What's your name?" The girl with the pig tails in the desk next to me whispered. I wasn't sure why she was whispering, the teacher was writing on the chalk board but she didn't say that we couldn't talk.
"Blakely." I whispered back, still unsure of why we were whispering. I glanced around the classroom and the other children were chattering noisily.
"Blakely?" She wrinkled up her nose and repeated my name. "That's pretty." She nodded in approval and for some reason that pleased me. "I'm Kya and I'm five and I like fairies." She was still whispering, it felt conspiritorial, as though among all of these other kids, we two were special.
"I'm five too!" I said excitedly, as though the rest of the classroom wasn't filled with five year olds. "I like your pig tails!"
"I like your dress!" She told me and I beamed with pride.
"My mama made it for me." I smoothed the buttery soft yellow fabric down on my thighs. Lots of little girls' mothers probably made them clothes but not a lot of girls' mothers were world famous clothing designers like mine.
"Want to be my best friend?" She asked very seriously and so we were, until we weren't anymore.
