Despite how confident I had felt before, walking into that same room with Inspector Liam staring me down like a piece of fresh meat made me want to crawl behind Principal Wilson's desk and disappear.
Instead I sat on that same comfortable chair and stared at the two inspectors. The principal and the older inspector looked as friendly as ever but that Liam guy, I had a feeling he didn't like me for some reason.
The way he stared at me with a persistent frown on his face made me downright uncomfortable. I wondered if he put on this tough 'I don't like you act' in front of the other students.
"Hello again, Rosalie. How have you been?" The older inspector greeted me cheerfully. His mustache moved along with his words again and I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from grinning at the sight.
However a brief glance at Inspector Liam was enough to kill my smile before it even formed. His eyes narrowed on my face and then they shifted to my hands. Thankfully this time they weren't digging into the seat, instead they were wrapped firmly around my book from class.
"Umm hello officers and Principal Wilson," I replied as I awkwardly nodded in their direction.
Inspector Liam leaned forward and was about to speak when Inspector Dave beat him to it. The older inspector cast the younger one a warning look which made him lean back and look down at the floor dejectedly.
"Well in light of some new information we have procured, I would like to ask you just a few more questions. Are you okay with that, Rosalie?" Inspector Dave spoke softly.
I stared at him cautiously. Some new information? I sincerely hoped this new information was in my favor. The fact that he was being so nice made me even more wary.
Was this some sort of good cop bad cop thing? Because if it was, it was definitely working. I was getting more nervous by the second.
I quickly nodded my head and waited for him to continue.
"What time did you leave the party last Friday night?" He asked and I swallowed the non existent saliva down my dry throat.
"Around eleven," I answered knowing full well that he had asked me that same question a few days ago.
"And why did you leave so early?"
Why was he repeating the same questions he had asked me the last time? Was he testing me or something?
"I..I got into a fight with my best friend Melanie." I frowned slightly.
"Yes, and we corroborated this story with your friend Melanie and she confirmed the same thing," He said and I was about to exhale in relief when he suddenly held up his hand looking deep in thought.
"But according to three other different sources you didn't leave immediately after the fight, did you? Instead you were seen with Derek, correct?" He raised his bushy eyebrows at me, deepening the lines on his forehead.
My breath caught in my throat and I was afraid I was going to choke. Was he asking me a question he already knew the answer to?
"I....I," I stuttered and I saw a small smile grow on Inspector Liam's face. "We bumped into each other and talked for while but it was really crowded and I felt really uncomfortable so I left."
"Why were you uncomfortable? Did Derek make you uncomfortable?" Inspector Liam finally spoke up.
Oh God. Did they know about what had happened? No, they couldn't. Unless Derek had told them but there was no way he would admit to such a thing. He would lose everything. His reputation, a chance at a sports scholarship, his popularity.
