STEVE'S POV

When I woke up the next day, Brooke still wasn't back at my apartment. I went to the living room to check on Bucky. He was still alive, but barely. I agreed with Brooklyn, he needed to go see a doctor. But he refused.

"Hey, Buck? I'm goin' out to find Brooke. She didn't come back last night." I shook his shoulder a little.

"Do you want me to help?" Bucky asked, not opening his eyes.

"No. Just stay here and sleep. Try to get yourself back to health. And don't die on me. Brooke'll kick my ass if she knows I left you here alone."

"You got a lucky girl, Steve." Bucky muttered. He must've been a little dazed.

"Yeah. You could find one too, ya know."

"No body wants someone like me. Just go find 'er, Steve."

"See ya, Buck."

"Hey, Nick? Have you seen Agent Romero?" I asked, walking into Nick's office.

"She was in her office last night. She didn't go home with you?"

"No. I'll go check her office." I turned to leave.

"Captain. She's pretty shaken up from everything that's been going on. With a few still cracked ribs, the Viper, her family, Mr. Barnes. Take it easy on her."

"You know about Bucky?"

"Yeah." He nodded. "Take it easy on her, Rogers."

"I will." I walked through the halls of the base, until I got to her office. I quietly opened the door. She was leaning back in her chair, staring at the wall. A pen was being twirled between her fingers. "Brooke?" When I said her name, she jumped and dropped the pen, looking up to me.

"You should be sleeping, Captain Rogers." Her eyes were dazed. She mustn't've slept last night.

"It's almost noon. Brooke? Did you sleep at all last night?" I asked, closing the door behind me.

"What's today's date?" She ignored my question.

"The eleventh of October."

"No, Steven. I didn't sleep last night. But I'm perfectly fine." She brushed her hand through her brunette hair and sighed.

"Brooke. Come on." She ignored me again.

"You left James, Steven! He could be dead!" Brooke shot up out of her seat and turned to me.

"He's not, Brooke. He's sleepin' it off." I held on to her shoulders. "You still have broken ribs. You need to be sleeping it off, too."

"And you need to stop babying me, Rogers."

"Brooklyn. You don't worry about yourself. Someone has to."

"That is what my mother is for, not you!"

"You pushed her away, Brooklyn. She isn't around for you anymore!" She gasped.

"And you aren't either." Brooklyn pushed me away and left the office. Damn it.

BROOKLYN'S POV

He was right. I pushed her away.

I walked into Steve's apartment.

"James?" I called for Bucky.

"Brooke?" He answered, coming from the living room. I walked into the living room. Bucky was sprawled out across the couch, his long legs were hanging over the arm of the couch.

"How are you feeling?" I asked, sitting on my knees in the floor beside the couch and facing him.

"A little dazzy, aching, tired. I'm good though." He shrugged, then coughed. "Brooke? Answer this question honestly. Why are you so worried about me?"

"I do not understand, Mr. Barnes." I furrowed my eyebrows.

"Nobody but ol' Steve ever cared about me. Why do you?" I thought of how to answer that.

"Because you no longer have a family. And with everything you've been through, you deserve someone who watches out for you." I shrugged slightly.

"You need to watch out for yourself more than anyone else." Bucky rubbed the top of my hand with his thumb. I laid my head down on his arm and sighed.

STEVE'S POV

I closed the door to my apartment behind me. I walked into the living room to see Bucky passed out, but Brooklyn was laying with her head on his arm. I slipped my arms under Brooklyn and carried her to my bedroom.

"Good night, Brooklyn." I kissed her forehead before laying down beside her.
