It is a curious thing, death. We all know that our time in this world is counted, and that eventually we'll end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up – just like Jason Blossom. And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know, or at least when it almost does happen. It is like walking up the stairs in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair. Your foot falls down, through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try and readjust the way you thought of things.
But sometimes, just sometimes, death has mercy, allowing us to keep going on, on borrowed time but still surviving – because not everyone that is not dead is alive.
"Are you sure?" Ellie spoke to the phone, surprised, "Cause' we can do it at mine's."
"No! He's totally ok with it, don't worry." Veronica assured her, "By the way, my Dad loved you, he's dying to get to know you."
"Yeah but why does that sound more terrifying than the thought of him hating me?"
"Because all you ever heard about him were bad things, said by me, but..." The raiven-haired girl sounded forgiving, "I'm moving past it, or trying. So please, help me do it."
"I'm with you, V but –."
Eleanor was interrupted, the view was confusing – the entire football team was reunited in the center of them field, Reggie and Archie were talking and by the looks of it, it seemed serious.
"E, is everything ok?" Her friend called her attention.
"Not sure." Ellie stood up, alert, "Archie made me watch his practice. But something seems off."
"What do you mean?"
"Look," The blonde frowned her eyebrows at her boyfriend's expression, he seemed surprised, and scared, "I'll call you later. I've gotta go."
"Wait –."
But the call had already ended, with Eleanor shoving her phone into her purse, and walking down the benchs. She rushed to the middle of the field, bumping into the students already turning their backs, leaving only Archie behind.
"Arch, what is going on?" She gestured to the players abandoning the field, "Why is everyone leaving?"
"It's Moose and Midge, they're at the hospital." He explained, "Moose was shot, in Lover's Lane, but he covered her body so she wasn't hit."
"W-what?" Ellie covered her mouth with one hand, gasping, "How?"
"Look, I'll get changed, wait for me outside the lockeroom." Archie warned, kissing her lips briefly before walking away.
There are many things we don't understand... and we become afraid, of what will happen – will I be the next Riverdale's grave?, students were asking themselves, Eleanor was asking herself –, it's ok to be afraid.
