talking to jonathan after he realizes nancy doesn't like him back

---

it broke your heart to see jonathan cry. it broke your heart to see him sad. it broke your heart to hear him talking about another girl. nancy. nancy wheeler. one of your best friends.

"hey... don't cry, don't cry, okay?" you told jonathan for what felt like the millionth time. you didn't really know what else to do. "she's not worth your tears." you grab his hand which was resting shakily on his thigh. "i need you to breathe okay? can you do that for me?" he nodded and took a deep breath in with you, exhaling it with a gentle shudder in his breathing, but it visibly calmed him so you did it again.

after a few breaths, you interlocked your own hand with his; he smiled up at you at the gesture, returning it and pulling you in for a hug. he'd stopped crying, because he actually felt happy. he felt happy that he had someone else to hang onto, ever since the incident will had become a bit de-attached and jonathan thought he had no one else to come to.

"hey..." you said, putting a hand on his shoulder when you both pulled away from your embrace. "listen okay? nancy... she's just like all the other girls okay? you'll find someone who stands out from the rest, i can promise you that. it might take months, years even... but i promise she'll come to you when the time is right. she's no good for you anyway..."

"thanks (y/n)... you really are the best. i don't know what i would do without you."

"me neither." you teased, yawning and stretching yourself out a little. "come on, it's 2am on a school night, let's get you to bed. i have to walk home before my dad finds out i left." you started to get up, but he grabbed your arm to stop you.

"s-stay...?"

"stay? jonathan, i'll be burned at the stake if my parents find out."

"just say you left the house before school started to get some extra studying done. please?" you sighed and sat back down on the bed.

"fine... but only because i love you." you teased again, getting some blankets from out of the closet and setting them up on the floor.

"u-uh (y/n) i have to change."

"go ahead, i'm not looking." you smiled, turning yourself around in order to properly set your floor-bed up.

jonathan felt a blush creep up on his cheeks, and he quickly tried to hide it even though he knew you weren't looking at him. maybe she was right. maybe someone would stand out from the crowd. maybe it could take months, years.

or... maybe it was right now.
