~1.5 years later...
Vanessa's POV:
Pulling on a pair of hole-filled sweatpants, I exited my room, heading towards the kitchen to rustle up some snacks. I looked at the heart-shaped sticky note over today, but nothing was written in the square. Turning the sticky note over, in Lance's scrawl, read "Reservations"
"Lance, what time are said reservations?" I asked, pencil poised over my calendar.
"7 pm. And no, we don't have a lab or lecture. I checked." Lance replied, walking up and wrapping an arm around me, pressing a kiss to my temple. I leaned into him, savoring his touch.
"Course you did, Lancelot. I'm going to go finish reading Chapter 43 for the lab tomorrow-"
He places his arms around me, successfully trapping me in his embrace. He turned me around so I was facing him. Tipping my chin to meet his gaze, he murmured,
"Mia ragazza, it is Valentine's Day. Relax, just for a few hours. Please." He punctuated the plea with a sweet kiss on the tip of my nose. He knew I found it impossible to resist his pleas, especially with him so close and on a day catered to my romantic heart.
"Fine...but you have to keep me company." I decided, taking his hand and trying my hardest to pull him to the couch, but failing. Damn his muscles.
"I'm definitely not complaining!" He exclaimed, snuggling into the corner of the couch with me as we clicked on Lady And the Tramp. For the next hour and 16 minutes, we laughed, awwed and held each other thru a tale of love.
Our relaxation session was cut short by one of my pre-set alarms, alerting me that it was time to hit the books...again. He groaned, nuzzling into my neck, keeping me in place-right beside him.
"Chapters of embryonic development will not understand themselves." I shrugged out of his arms and stood, missing his comforting embrace as I walked towards my room.
"Until 6 pm, mia cara." He said to me as I walked away. Oh, how I wished I could have turned around and ignored the mounting amount of work due.
Ugh...only 3 years left. I love medicine, I really do, but the workload is unbelievable. I set an alarm for 5 pm and various other for every step of the "glamming" process as Brooklyn calls it...blame my Type A personality!
A few hours later...
I finished applying my favorite lipstick and threw it into my purse for possible touch-ups. I opened the door to find Lance dressed up in a suit and matching, but a slightly crooked tie.
Walking up to him, I stood on my toes and fixed his tie before pulling him down to my lips. Pulling away, I asked,
"Ready?"He nodded and we headed to his car, which was thankfully warmer than outdoors.
We drove to his friend's restaurant, yes the one where we had our first date.
Handing over the keys to the valet, he took my hand as we walked to the balcony table. Ah, this brings back so many memories. We ate our favorite dishes and drank our favorite (non-alcoholic) drinks as the sun began to set. Lance stood and said,
"I'll be back in a minute," heading in the direction of the restrooms. I leaned back, sipped on my drink, admiring the setting sun though it was fairly high in the sky currently.
Lance returned shortly, but a covered plate in hand. He placed the plate on the table and took my hand. As we stood on the balcony, he began speaking,
"I remember this exact moment, a little over a year ago, our first date," He began tracing circles on the back of my hand.
"Mhm, I remember. That was magical and mind-blowing all in one with you kissing me just as the sun dipped into the water," I replied, my lips turning up in a suppressed smile, remembering how sweet that had been. His hand stopped making circles and just held onto mine. I stared into the sunset, appreciating the waves reaching up to the sky while the Sun got progressively smaller.
"Well...I hope this is just as mind-blowing..." He said, taking my hand and turning me around to face the plate. With a flourish, he pulled the cover off and presented to me 12 cupcakes. I looked up at him, mouth open in amazement,
"You want me to unscramble these!?" He nodded, smiling proudly. I taught him well. So now...I have to decipher this message. In under two minutes, I gasped, shocked, to say the least.
I looked up, my heart threatening to jump out of my chest. Lance knelt down and took my hand in his, before pulling out a velvet box, revealing a breathtaking ring with a heart-shaped diamond at its center.
"Vanessa, over the years I have realized that calling you just my girlfriend wasn't enough. You are my movie marathon partner, my teacher in all things sweet, my lab partner, my everything. I would love nothing more than to call you my wife. Will you marry me?"
I don't think my smile could have gotten broader or the tears could've come faster at that moment.
"Yes, Lancelot." He broke into a wider smile and slipped the ring onto my finger before jumping up and kissing me, bringing me closer to him.
I heard a squeal behind me along with excited clapping, so I pulled away and turned around to see Brooklyn, Chase, Lance's parents, and...my parents? Brooklyn was the first to reach me, crushing me in a hug which Chase joined. When they pulled away, Lance's parents filled their spot and exclaimed,
"Welcome to the family, Vanessa!" before squeezing me tight.
The last ones to come up were my parents and for the first time in recent memory, or ever really, I saw a smile on both their faces. Not an I-want-to-seal-the-deal smile but a genuine smile that reached the depths of their eyes. My dad got to first, hugging me, my mother joining us.
"Congratulations, baby girl." My dad whispered, so low only us four could hear it. He turned to Lance and said gruffly,
"You better treat her right. Better than I did, son." Pulling away, Lance put an arm around my waist and announced,
"Cupcake time!"
