BECCA'S P.O.V.          EIGHTEEN YEARS LATER

"You're son is always doing something cute, Marya. What was it this time?" I asked. Marya laughs and the phone crackles. "Ok, so, I put Julio to bed and, then I come back and he's chewing off his toenails!" She exclaimed. I laughed evenly. "Yeah, kids are cute. 'Must be fun to a have another child running around the house." I sighed. "Yeah. Most of the time. But then there's the rest of the time where they break your wedding china." Marya replied. I frowned. "Did one of your kids touch your wedding china?" I demanded. "No, no! They've done other things though." She assured me. "Oh, I doubt it! Julio, Sophia and Eleanor are all perfect angels." I insisted. "Pft. Whatever!" She snorted. "Ok, ok. Everyone is fine. Are we good?" I said. "Yes." Marya said. I glanced out my kitchen window into the backyard. My nine-year-old twin girls where jumping rope with our thirteen-year-old adopted daughter. "So, what schools are Silver looking at? I bet she wants to take after her mother and open her own salon. Or take over when you retired." She said sweetly. I reddened. "Retirement. Too far away for Silver to make a career out of that." I said. "Eleanor's looking at Harvard. I think she could get accepted." Marya said. "Well she certainly has the grades for it." I agreed. "I know. She gets those from Jason." Marya said proudly. "He did have the best marks in the grade." I replied. "But I can't believe my little Eleanor is off to school soon." Marya sighed. "Right?! It seems like over yesterday Silver was a little baby. It makes me want another." I said wistfully. "I know how you feel. But we certainly can't handle four kids like you. That's why our kids have such big age gaps. We can only do one little child at a time. Yeah, Julio will probably be our last. I mean, I'm thirty-five man!" Marya exclaimed. "Well I wouldn't mind one more, I guess." I said.

"Hi Dylan. You're here earlier than usual." I said, looking up at my husband entered the family room. He shrugged. "Hi beautiful. Boss 'let me off early because I've been doing so well lately. I picked Silver up from school. I'm taking her over to Eleanor's in a little bit. Did you want to go and see Marya?" He offered. I shook my head. "Thanks, but no. Marya's out, Jason's there. I really don't want to see him." I replied. He shrugged again. "Suit yourself." He said and wandered into the kitchen. "Where are the other kids?" He called. I frowned. "They might still be outside? Probably...." I answered. He came back into the room with a cup of water. "Aww, boo. I want to see them." He said. "Go outside." I said. He shook his head and plopped down me. "I'm too lazy." He declared, setting his drink on the coffee table. He leaned back, put his feet up, and slung his arm over my shoulders. He leaned across and kissed me. I giggled. "What was that for?" I wondered. "Nothing. I just really love you." He said simply. I blushed. "You're so cute." I said. Silver walked briskly into the room then and turned to me. "Mom, I-" She began and noticed Dylan. "Hey Dad." She said. He nodded at her. Ok, so your probably wondering why Silver calls Dylan 'Dad' when he's not her biological father. Silver knows this too. He was just always the father figure in her life and they love each other like a father and daughter should. But if Silver has an issue, she always comes to me. "What do you need, Silver?" I asked. "I need a ride to the carnival. Not like a 'ride, ride' but I need to borrow your car. I said I could probably drive." She told me. "When is it?" I asked calmly. "Next Saturday. Saturday evening." She said. "Yes, you may borrow the car." I answered. She smiled. "Thanks. Dad you're still driving me?" She said. He nodded. "Great! Thanks!" She trilled and ran off. "I can't believe she'll be gone soon." I sighed. "I know. But she'll be back to visit many, many times." He assured me. "It kind of makes me want another." I went on. "I know you really don't. We still have Stella, Melanie, and Ella." He said. "But they're growing up too fast too!" I wailed. "Becca, you don't want another baby." He said firmly. I put my head in my hands. "I think I do." I whispered miserably. "Cool down, Becca. We'll discuss it later." He said firmly. And that was that. For now.

"Why are you so stubborn, Becca?" Dylan sighed. "I want a baby!" I insisted. "You like the idea of a baby. We're too old." He said. "We're still in our thirties. People are having babies in their forties!" I replied. "Becca....." "Dylan........"

I honked the horn of my Cadillac. "Melanie, Silver, let's go! We're going to be late! I still have to drop Stella and Ella off at school! Let's go, high school kids!" I shouted. Silver is in grade twelve and Melanie grade nine. Stella and Ella are in grade four. "We have a scientist coming in today." Stella announced from the back of the car. "Oh, ain't that neat." I responded absentmindedly, staring at the front door. Melanie appeared, dragging her bag along the brick path. "Aww, Mel, pick up your bag!" I wailed under my breath. She went around the driver's side and slid into the back since it was Silver's turn to sit in the front. They alternated by day, which meant tomorrow Melanie would have the passenger's seat. Silver ran out the front door, slamming the door behind her. The old, rusty door seemed to rattle. She leapt into the seat beside me. I looked at her and cocked an eyebrow. "Forgetting something?" I said. She frowned and seemed to think for a second. Suddenly, realization seeped into her face and she dashed back into the house. She soon reappeared with her backpack and she returned to the car. I nodded and pulled out of the driveway.

I was sweeping in my salon looking out of my window when a woman walked by with a little baby in a stroller. "Aww!" My cousin Ethel gushed next to me. She was nearly nineteen and she was my best employee. She was  natural. I could see her opening her own salon one day. "I want another baby." I admitted. "Another baby? Aren't you too old?" Ethel wondered. "Ethel, you're never too old." I replied. "Unless you have menopause." She pointed out. "I don't have menopause! Frankly, I don't even think I'm close. " I say. Ethel laughs. "True." She agreed. A man with a little, baby boy walked in and I went to the front desk. "Hi, welcome! Men's haircut?" I said. "Little man haircut. Do you do babies?" He wondered. I nodded. "Yes. I cut my own babies hair. But I have no more babies, they're all grown up. I think I can recall." I said. He grinned. "Great!" He said and held his son out to me. I took him and walked further out into the salon.
