Feelings

I walk into the hospital room, a cup of coffee in each hand. Antonio is scrolling through his phone, not-so-discreetly looking at Julien as she sleeps in the bed.

"Looking at anything interesting?"

He jerks, startled by my voice. He's clearly embarrassed that he was caught.

"It's hard to believe that someone could do something so horrible to such a beautiful woman. Then two people have to do it? That makes it ten times worse."

I raise my eyebrows at him.

"Is that a hint of a crush that I hear?"

His face turns a bright shade of red.

"You like my sister?!"

"I dated you once. Is it really that surprising that I've developed a crush on your sister?"

I should be offended, but I'm more amused.

"You've only met her a handful of times!"

"I'm keeping her company here while you are commuting between her and college."

"That's your choice. You could be going to classes just like I am. Julien's an adult, she can take care of herself."

As soon as the words leave my lips, I regret them.

"But she shouldn't be going through this alone."

"I know. I shouldn't have said that."

"When was the last time you got a full night of sleep?"

I honestly have to think about that answer.

"What's your definition of 'full night'?"

"Eight uninterrupted hours of sleep."

"Bathroom breaks interrupt sleep."

He rolls his eyes.

"Eight hours of sleep in general. Better?"

"Yes. The last time I got eight hours was before high school."

Now I'm just purposefully getting on his nerves.

"How many hours of sleep did you get last night."

"Three hours? Give or take."

He stands up, extracting the coffee from my hands.

"You need to get some sleep."

He's right. I'm exhausted.

"Okay. Tell Julien I say hello when she wakes up,"

"Go home and get to sleep already!"

I throw my hands up, laughing as I leave the room.
