I grab a cup of coffee from the coffee shop before walking back to my car. I set the cup in the holder, starting the car and pulling out of the lot. It doesn't take long for me to get to the hospital. I meet Antonio outside. He smiles at me when I walk up.
"I need your opinion on something."
"On what, exactly?"
He pulls out a box, opening the lid. A beautiful necklace is laying in soft black velvet.
"It's gorgeous."
"I was gonna give it to Julien as a good luck charm for court today."
"She's going to love it. You do know she swings a different way, right?"
He shrugs, closing the box and putting it back in his jacket pocket.
"A guy can dream, right?"
"Let's go. I want to see if she needs any moral support before she goes."
He follows me upstairs to the room. I approach the desk while Antonio walks into her room. He comes running back out a few seconds later.
"Julien's gone!"
"What?!"
"She was here one moment and now she's gone."
I push by him, running into the room. Her sheets are wrinkled and her bag of clothes is still on the chair.
"Dammit!"
Antonio looks over at me, confused.
"What?"
"She told me last night that she didn't want to testify. This is her way of making sure that she won't have to."
I shove my fingers into my hair, frustrated. I should have known she would do something like this.
Worst part is, I can't look for her.
She'll come out of hiding in a few days. She'll realize that she's being foolish.
Then she'll have to testify.
"I have to call Mr. Albright and tell him thatJulien is unable to testify today."
This is how I imagine the necklace Antonio bought for Julien.
