***Five Years Later***
I bounce my infant son, Benjamin, on my hip. My husband of three years, Antonio, walks into the room.
"Good morning, beautiful."
I kiss Antonio on the cheek before grabbing the bottle off the counter to feed Benjamin.
"Dada!"
Our one and a half year old daughter, Sara, runs into the room.
"Hey, munchkin."
He scoops her up in his arms, kissing her head.
"Let's get you ready for Grandma Celia and Grandpa Nate to visit."
I watch as he leads her into the living room. The doorbell rings and he calls from the living room.
"I got it!"
"No need! I'm already in the house!"
I exit the kitchen, a hungry Benjamin getting fussier on my hip.
"Julien! I'm so glad you made it!"
Sapphire walks in behind her.
After years of hanging out with her, I never knew she was lesbian until I caught her and Julien kissing on the couch one day.
"It's good to see you, Sapphire."
"Can I hold my godson?"
I hand over Benjamin and his bottle. She takes him over to the couch in the living room. Julien grabs onto my sleeve.
"Can I speak with you in the kitchen for a moment?"
"Yeah."
As soon as she is satisfied that we are out of earshot, she starts talking.
"How would you feel about becoming an aunt?"
"What?"
I know that Sapphire and Julien were discussing adoption or even in vitro fertilization. I didn't know anything would work so quickly.
"What are you saying, Julien?"
"Sapphire and I are going to pick up our son next week from the adoption agency!"
