I sat at the dinning room table as o occupied myself by reading headlines in the daily newspaper. Theodoisa worked busily behind me making some apple pie that she tried to make every Sunday afternoon.
"Anything good in the paper?" Theodoisa asked as she whipped her hands on her apron walking up to me.
I shrugged.
"'Nothing that interesting besides John Adams...he isn't making a very good impression to the public now a days." I huffed.
"His presidency is a mystery and next Election doesn't seem promising." Theodoisa murmured.
I bit my lip as I nodded slowly.
"If only George Washington was still president, everyone liked him." Theodoisa sighed.
All of a sudden Burr walked into the kitchen with a letter clutched in his hand.
"Good afternoon father." Theodoisa greeted.
"I'm sorry I couldn't attended with you to church, I was tied up with my work." Burr apologized as he hugged Theodoisa.
"It's alright, you didn't miss anything important." Theodoisa sighed rolling her eyes.
Burr turned to me with a smile.
"I've got a letter for you Mr.Auditore, its addressed from Mr.Washington himself." Burr chuckled as he handed me the paper.
Questions filled my mind as I tore open the letter.
"What does it say?" Theodoisa asked peering over my shoulder."Dear Ezio Auditore,
Your reputation is astonishing, for a man like you at your age I've never seen someone so committed to their job , well besides Alexander Hamilton that is. While I am enjoying a pleasant life here at Mount Vernon, I have invited you to come for a visit if of course you don't have any other plans to attend to. Nothing serious, just a pleasant visit from a trustworthy friend such as yourself.
General George Washington."I looked up from the letter with a smile.
"Congratulations Ezio!" Theodoisa exclaimed.
My gaze turned to Burr as he looked down at me with an encouraging smile.
"It seems that the General has taken a liking towards you." Burr said.
I looked back at the letter in my hand as I shrugged.
"I guess he always had." I murmured.
I folded the note as a rush of warmth swept over me. The thought that I could be trusted by George Washington himself was very inspiring.
"Well he's not the chipper young general like he was, but I guess he still has the thoughtfulness he's always had." Burr noted.
Burr gave a long sigh as he turned from the kitchen.
"I hope that you can accept his offer." Burr said, the smile fading from his face as he walked out of the kitchen.
I stared after him with curiosity.
"Was Burr not very acquainted with Washington?" I asked turning to Theodoisa.
Theodoisa sighed as she shook her head slowly.
"From what Burr told me, the General always seemed to overlook his capabilities and looked towards Hamilton as he one and only right hand man." Theodoisa explained.
I crossed my arms as I nodded.
"I see...I guess that's how it's always been between Hamilton and Burr." I sighed.
I gave a long sigh as I got up from the table.
"Well I guess I'll write back to Washington about my acceptance to his invitation." I said fixing my collar.
Theodoisa nodded as she stepped aside letting me pass. I walked up the stairs and into my room. My cluttered desk was waiting as I sat down, brushing away some papers as I picked up my quill and started to write."Dear George Washington,
With a lot of eagerness and consideration I have accepted you invitation. If my schedule appeals to my liking, I will take leave from New York on September 12th and arrive the following two days if the weather is suitable. I appreciate the offer and much honored to see you again.
Ezio Auditore."I set my quill down as I read over the letter. I glanced over at the window as the setting sun casted an orange glow into the room. I got up as I extinguished the burning candle by my bedside. I got on my coat as I made my way towards City Hall with my reply tucked in my coat pocket. A few people hurried about trying to get anything they needed to get down before darkness enclosed them into their houses for the night. The humidity in the air hung over the city like a thick blanket. The smell of the sick lingered in the streets, the awful stench of vomit and blood hit my nose as my stomach knotted as my head ached as I proceeded down to City Hall.
I walked down the quite streets as my footsteps echoed off the buildings I passed. Washing away in my own thoughts I was interrupted with a shout. I looked up to see a man and a women with a child clutched to her dress. The man I didn't recognize but the women I've seen walking up and down the streets always it seemed in the same direction.
"Leave you whore!" The man yelled at the women.
"Don't ever come back and take your stupid child too!" He scream as he pointed to a small child who was clinging onto her mothers red dress.
"No...please I can fix..fix this!" The women cried.
"The only thing that you've fixed was your selfish need for another man!" The man spat.
"It...it was the only thing that kept Susan...alive...we needed the money!" The women shook.
I blinked as I stopped. Something oddly familiar crossed my mind. The affair...the money...the Pamphlet.
Could it be? Were the people standing across the street from me, the Reynolds family? I stared in curiosity as the two couple argued on.
"And you wanted what you got...now leave!" The man hissed.
"So...so it's like that, leaving me on the streets with our daughter penniless." The women shook.
"You have family, now get out of here, I do not want to go to jail again!" The man scoffed.
"No.." The women sobbed as the door closed abruptly.
A pang of sorrow filled my heart as I watched as she gave her daughter a huge as she sobbed into her shaking frame.
"Where are we going mama?" The small voice squeaked as they broke from the embrace.
"This city has brought no good to us, you know Jacob Clingman, well we're gonna move to London with him and never come back alright?" The women sniffed as she stood up taking her daughters hand as they walked down the stairs of the house.
I was about to make on my way when they started to cross the street. I froze when the women caught my eye. She looked down again as she pierced her lips together. I had to do something. I felt awful for their situation. Before I could think I called out to the women.
"Mis." I called as they both turned to meet my gaze.
"I would like to help you." I said approaching cautiously.
The women looked up at me with a frown.
"I am very sorry to hear into your conversation, I feel pity I do." I sighed.
The women sighed as she crossed her arms.
"It's alright, my husband James Reynolds is always like that." The women sighed.
I blinked again. I was correct, it was the Reynolds family. All this time this women who's always shown her face to me was Maria Reynolds. Hamilton's "mistress". I didn't feel panic or disgusted, instead I felt calm as I spoke.
"I know it's not much but it might do you well Mis.Reynolds." I said rummaging through my pocket and retrieved a pouch of coins.
Maria gasped as she looked up at me with worry.
"Its to much sir." She pleaded.
"Please take the money, I don't mind at all Mis." I said with a small smile.
Hesitantly Maria took the money from my hand.
"Thank you sir, you're to kind." She sighed.
I backed up as I eyed Maria's child clutching her dress as she looked fearfully up at me. All I could do is smile sadly at the girl as I looked back at Maria.
"I must get going." I said.
Maria nodded as she grabbed her daughters hand softly.
"Please take care, and your daughter too." I said sadly.
"Thank you again sir.." Maria murmured looking up at me before turning away and walked down the street along with her daughter.
I never saw them again. I stood there in the quiet street looking perplexed as ever. Was the Reynolds Pamphlet all truthful? Did Hamilton bypass something vitally important that he had no clue about? I took a deep breath as I started to walk again. This was something that Hamilton needed to know about...
