Alone.
The forest was dead. Silent. Not a bird nor a bug dared to voice its call lest it draw attention to itself.
Mist drifted and floated between the damp, dark trees, carrying an unnatural chill.
There was a tension in the air, but I kept still...listening.
I resisted the tremble my limbs wanted to take on, I would not fear the beasts. Droplets of moisture rolling down my leather jacket onto the ground and my boots was the only visible movement. The black 38 revolver with its six inch barrel glinted dully in the misty light.
Click.
Cocked, rounds ready and waiting. A challange.
Challange accepted. The mist was ruffled by a long, wiry form and the earth under my feet shook as a deep growl, heard only in your worst nightmares rolled through the forest.
I grinned, was it him?
Through the mist, two eyes appeared, yellow and glowing, diseased and full of bloodlust.
Jaw clenched, I pulled my gun up, aimed, and shot the werewolf before it could even poise to pounce.
It was not Adrian.
Sighing, I lowered my gun. The dark, slim figure I knew had been watching the whole time drifted in between two trees, and came out of the wet clouds, into my sight.
"You should not be hunting alone...what if he had been there?" Blue eyes accused me from beneath soft dark lashes.
"I would have shot him, just like the others," I said defiantly, ignoring the fact that I had never been alone, Shane wouldn't let that happen.
Shane stepped closer, his pale skin almost glowing against his blue v-neck. "Could you really kill someone you love?...no matter if it was for their own good or not."
"I...I could," Flustered, I couldn't meet his eyes, he was too close.
Shane leaned even closer, there was barely a centimeter between us. His warm breath swept over my lips, "By the time you decide, he will kill you, Bella."
Shane was right, I realized that...but my stubborn pride would not accept defeat. "You don't know that," I shoved past him, disappearing into the dark woods.
After I had stomped far enough away I whispered, "I'm scared." I did not want Shane to realize how utterly frightened I was of this whole situation.
For over two months I have been reconnecting with my real parents, my friend, and my home. I have been training like a monster to defend myself against the nightmare that my first love has become. I have been struggling to take it in stride, but sometimes things just pile up and it is too much to deal with at once.
Can I do my duty and put werewolves out of their insane misery? Can I kill my love? Will I be able to move on if I am able to do so? Will I be able to love again?
Shane's face flashed in my mind's eye and I immediately blushed, shoving the image away with a wave of my hand.
Impossible.
