Mid July 2017
(Seoul Musical Theatre)
"Thank you all for being here today," Mr. Choi, our musical director who had passionately driven and led the pre-production from start to finish, begun his speech at the auditorium with gratitude towards the cast and crew.
"I'm really happy to be able to work alongside such a professional team of people who tirelessly put in their best foot forward to create this musical stage. For some of you, the preparation stage started as early as last winter, and for others, you had to put in just as much effort in the past two months. We relied on each other, worked out our differences in opinions and I can finally say with a relieved heart... I have no doubt that this production is going to wow our audiences."
His last sentence kicked off a round of thundering applause from his audience, who I must say, have worked so hard. The floor was all smiles, and in particular, a man of tall and lean stature who sat at the first row on the left side of the hall.
"Could you help to show the slide on the rosters, Ms. Cha?" Mr. Choi turned to his assistant briefly.
"Here's what you've been waiting for, everyone. And I will not keep you waiting any longer... The official roster for Ghost The Musical. As we are reading this slide, Ms. Cha is sending an email to all of you, roster attached."
The roster was tabled for the entire fall, with the show running three nights through the weeknights and twice a day on the weekends. To ensure this musical kicked off with a bang, the premiere night would be the defining highlight, as that would subsequently set the pace for the remainder of the musical's run. My eyes shifted anxiously to the premiere date schedule, and found itself a little dry as So-hee's name (Molly) was printed next to Hyungsik's (Sam).
I felt a slight nudge from Kim Mi-Ha sunbaenim then, and she wore a knowing grin on her face. "It's okay, honey. Sometimes star power plays a part in the game. That's what makes the world goes round."
"Sunbaenim... How did you...?"
"I can tell what my juniors are thinking, with just one look," she chuckled huskily.
I shrugged, mostly at myself, "I'm happy for So-hee sshi, I really am. But there was a slight disappointment, I guess?"
"Your time will come, one day. Perhaps sooner than you'll think," she stressed her latter sentence, before turning her attention back onto the screen, "For now, you're up on the first Friday night."
I nodded with a laugh, "Friday night it is. And it'll be an honor, sharing my first performance stage with you."
"I'm glad that makes up for half the problem!"
Mi-Ha sunbaenim's word of advice helped me to keep my chin up. After all, there were more things to look forward to, than to feel dampened about. It's been a week since the less-than-pretty confrontation from Hyungsik's sasaeng fan, and I will not let myself be consumed in another non-existential worry. Things will fall into place, at the right time, and I had to believe in that.
"Will the Sams, the Mollys, the Oda Maes and the Carls, please join me up on stage?" Mr. Choi commented with his signature warm smile.
We do so, without further delay. As Mi-Ha sunbaenim and I sat furthest from the stage, we were the last to join the others on the stage. Not wanting to have the two of us standing by the side of the row, Hyungsik walked coolly towards us, giving up his center spot, so that we would be able to draw nearer to the center. In doing this, he managed with a spot next to me, sporting a devious grin on his face.
